The best time to visit Tirumala Tirupati — season-by-season weather, crowd patterns, least-crowded days, and planning tips for NRIs.
Tirumala — the hilltop abode of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji) — draws millions of devotees year-round. Choosing the right time makes darshan far more comfortable, especially for NRI families travelling from afar. This guide covers the weather and the crowd patterns so you can plan well.
Best Time Overall
The best time to visit Tirumala is September to February, and especially October to January, when the weather is pleasant and the hill is comfortable for darshan. Summer (April–May) is best avoided due to heat.
Weather by Season
- Winter (October–February): pleasant and cool (roughly 15–30°C) — the most comfortable time for the climb and darshan.
- Summer (March–June): warm to hot; April–May can be torrid on the plains (up to ~42°C), though Tirumala hill is a little cooler. Best avoided if you can.
- Monsoon (July–September): the hills turn lush green, temperatures are moderate (around 24–30°C) and crowds are often lighter — pleasant, with occasional rain.
Crowd Patterns
- Peak crowds: during Brahmotsavam (September/October), Vaikunta Ekadasi (December/January), other major festivals, public holidays, long weekends and summer school holidays. During the biggest festivals, Sarva (free) Darshan waits can stretch to many hours — even over a day.
- Least crowded days: weekdays, especially Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Quieter windows: mid-January to mid-February (after Sankranti) and the monsoon dip generally see lighter crowds.
Recommendations for NRIs
- Most comfortable weather + manageable crowds: October to February, on a weekday (Tuesday/Wednesday).
- Fewest crowds: a non-festival weekday, or the post-Sankranti / monsoon windows.
- Festive atmosphere: visit during Brahmotsavam — but only if you’re comfortable with very large crowds and long waits.
- Best avoided for short queues: peak-festival days, public holidays and the April–May heat.
Planning Tips
- Book darshan and accommodation in advance through the official TTD website; create your account before you travel.
- NRIs can use the on-arrival NRI/Special Entry darshan with passport + visa — see our full guide for details.
- Carry warm layers in winter and an umbrella in the monsoon; the hill weather can change.
