History and Significance of Mukteshwara Temple

Mukteshwara Temple is built in the 10th century it is of monumental significance in the history of Hindu temples and in Bhubaneswar. This temple is also known as Mukteswara Deula dedicated to Lord Maha Shiva, like many other temples in Bhubaneswar which bears some architectural importance with other temples like the Lingaraja and the Rajarani Temple. The temple records back to 970 CE and marks the conclusion of earlier developments in Hindu temples construction. This Mukteswara temple is located in Bhubaneswar and accepts to be one of the most visited tourist spots in India. The temple offers traditional and social knowledge to historians, architects and to many tourists in its own special way.

The history of the famous Mukteshwara Temple is considered to be one of the earliest temples of the Somavamsi Dynasty rule. Many scholars believe that this temple is the replacement temple of the Parasurameswar temple built earlier than the Bramheswara temple of that time. According to Percy Brown, the date of construction for this temple is considered in 950 CE is what makes this temple unique is its Torana which is not observed in any other temples in Bhubaneswar. Some of the illustrations in this temple indicate that the builders of this temple were starters of a new culture not following the earlier styles. This Temple is said to have received benefactions from King Yatayati 1.

The Mukteshwara temple is recognised as the gem of Odisha because of its architecture. The temple faces west and is constructed the same as another group of temples. This adorned temple has four significant parts known as Porch, Jagamohana Vimana and Sanctum. The pyramidal structure on top of the Jagamohana is the first of its own kind developed. It differs highly from the typical two-tier structure of all other temples of this era considered.

The most important appeal of this temple is its Porch or the Torana. The arched gateway was established during 900 CE. This gateway has thick pillars with elaborate bead strings and women wearing them. The women in the pillars are smiling and carved in the languorous stills. Inside the Porch is a walled chamber with internal pillars that are arranged carefully to add attraction and importance to the temple. The gateway is too high decorated and sculptured with happy women, animals and peacocks. Inside the sanctum, Nagas or snakes are used along with statuettes to introduce the love of Lord Shiva as per Hindu mythology.

The temple significance says that the term Mukteswar refers to the Lord of Freedom and why it is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva. Some scholars believe that this temple serves as the centre for tantric initiation. It has many sculptural monks in different meditation and practising poses. The temple is believed to be sacred. The Madicha Kunda tank located on the axioms is said to have pure water. It is said that before the Ashokastami night if a childless woman dips in the tank then she will give birth to a boy. On the evening of the event, the tank water is offered is sold to the public.
