Karthika Somavaram 2026 Singapore: the four Mondays
| Somavaram | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Mon 16 Nov 2026 | First Monday of the month; tithi changes close to sunrise |
| 2nd | Mon 23 Nov 2026 | Day before Karthigai Deepam and Karthika Pournami (Tue 24 Nov) |
| 3rd | Mon 30 Nov 2026 | Waning-moon fortnight |
| 4th | Mon 7 Dec 2026 | Also Masik Shivaratri; tithi changes close to sunrise |
Every Monday inside Karthika Masam is a Karthika Somavaram, so the four Monday dates themselves are firm. What can vary is which tithi is linked with the day.
The close-to-sunrise caveat
A Hindu calendar day takes the tithi that is running at local sunrise. In Singapore, our calculation shows the tithi changing very close to sunrise on 16 November, 17 November and 7 December. When this happens, different panchangs can give different answers. For example, a temple calendar might place Masik Shivaratri on a day next to 7 December.
This does not change the Somavaram itself. For temple pujas, follow your temple's calendar. For your own fast at home, you can follow this guide, Drik Panchang for Singapore, or your family priest.

Why Karthika Mondays matter
Monday, Somavaram, is named after Soma, the Moon, who is said to have been freed from a curse by worshipping Shiva. Karthika is the month most loved by Shiva, so its Mondays carry special merit. In Telugu homes the Karthika Somavaram vratam is one of the main observances of the year. Tamil families in Singapore also honour Shiva through the month of Karthigai, which ends in the festival of lamps.
Somavaram vratam vidhi at home
- Early morning: bathe, wear clean clothes, clean the puja corner and make a short sankalpa (resolution) for the vratam.
- Lamp: light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp. In Karthika, the lamp is the heart of every puja.
- Abhishekam: pour water slowly over a Shiva linga while chanting "Om Namah Shivaya". You can add milk, curd, honey and ghee, and finish with water.
- Bilva: offer bilva leaves in sets of three, along with white flowers, vibhuti and sandal paste. If bilva is not available, offer any clean flowers with devotion.
- Prayer: chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times, or recite the Shiva Panchakshara Stotram.
- Evening: after sunset, light the lamp again, offer fruit, do aarti and break the fast.
Fasting options and sunset time
- Nakta vratam: no food during the day; one simple vegetarian meal after sunset.
- Fruit and milk: only fruit, milk and water until evening.
- Full fast: only for healthy adults who are used to fasting.
| Date | Sunset in Singapore (SGT) |
|---|---|
| Mon 9 Nov 2026 (for reference) | 6:51 PM |
| Mon 23 Nov 2026 (2nd Somavaram) | 6:53 PM |
| Tue 24 Nov 2026 (Karthika Pournami) | 6:54 PM |
Singapore's sunset stays near 6:50 to 7 PM all month, so the time to break the fast is almost the same on every Karthika Monday. Check a local almanac for the exact minute on 16 and 30 November and 7 December.
Masik Shivaratri on Monday 7 December
By our calculation, Masik Shivaratri falls on the last Somavaram, Monday 7 December 2026, as it does in India. Devotees often keep the Monday fast, do an evening abhishekam and a short prayer late at night. Because of the close-to-sunrise caveat, check your temple's calendar for its Shivaratri puja. Read more in Karthika Masa Shivaratri 2026.
Tips for a working Monday in Singapore
- Do a short abhishekam before you leave for work, and keep the main lamp and aarti for the evening.
- Carry water, fruit or milk if you keep a partial fast. Singapore's heat and humidity make dehydration a real risk.
- In an HDB flat, keep the lamp on a metal plate away from curtains and never leave it alone.
- If you want to join a temple puja on a Karthika Monday, check your temple's website or notice board for times.
- Singapore is two and a half hours ahead of India. Your 7 PM aarti is 4:30 PM in India.

Health note
A long fast is not right for everyone. Elders, diabetics, people with heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant or nursing women, children and anyone on regular medicine should consult a doctor first and keep a gentle fast. Shiva is pleased by devotion, not by harm to the body.

By our calculation, yes: Masik Shivaratri falls on Monday 7 December 2026, the last Karthika Somavaram. However, the tithi changes close to sunrise that day, so some temple calendars may show Shivaratri on a neighbouring day.

They are calculated by HinduTone using the Drik Panchang method. They match Drik Panchang in our checks for other countries, but please confirm them on Drik Panchang for Singapore.
Can I do the Somavaram puja without a temple visit?
Yes. A simple abhishekam at home with water, a lamp, bilva leaves or flowers and the chant "Om Namah Shivaya" is a complete offering.
Is fasting safe in Singapore's heat?
Singapore is hot and humid, so drink enough water. Elders, diabetics, pregnant women, children and anyone on medicine should consult a doctor and keep a gentle fast, such as fruit and milk.
