Naga worship in Singapore's Hindu community
Nagula Chavithi is the Chaturthi of the bright half of Karthika, dedicated to the Naga devatas. It is above all a Telugu festival: in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, women fast and go to a snake anthill (putta) at dawn with milk, turmeric, flowers, chalimidi and chimmili, praying for their children's health and the family's protection.
Most Hindus in Singapore are Tamil, and Nagula Chavithi is not a major festival in the Tamil calendar. But naga worship itself is very familiar here: naga stones and serpent images are common in South Indian temple traditions, often under a sacred tree, and Murugan, whose devotion is strong in Singapore, is linked with the serpent in many legends. Telugu and Kannada families, many of whom came for work in recent decades, will recognise the day; Kannada households often keep their main Naga worship at Naga Panchami in Shravana instead.
Wildlife in a garden city
- Snakes live close by: pythons and other snakes are sometimes seen in parks, park connectors and even housing estates. Keep your distance and never try to handle one.
- Protected wildlife: Singapore's wildlife laws protect native animals. Feeding or disturbing wildlife in parks and nature areas is not allowed.
- Milk is not snake food: pouring milk into a burrow harms whatever lives there and, in the tropical heat, spoils fast and draws ants.
- If you see a snake: move away, keep children and pets back, and contact NParks or a wildlife rescue group.
A naga puja for an HDB flat or condo
- Idol: a small silver, brass or copper naga, or a naga drawn in rice flour and turmeric on a plate. Puja stores in Little India usually have them in the Deepavali season.
- Abhishekam: pour a little milk and then water over the idol in a plate, and apply turmeric and kumkum.
- Offerings: flowers, chalimidi, chimmili, bananas and soaked chana.
- Chant: "Om Nagadevatayai Namah" 11 or 108 times for the health of the children.
- Lamp: keep it inside the flat, not in the common corridor, or use an LED diya.
- Milk afterwards: drink it as prasadam or water a potted plant; don't pour it in common areas.
Some temples in Singapore have a naga shrine. Ask your temple whether anything is planned, and check its website for current timings. We do not give a clock-time muhurat; check Drik Panchang for Singapore.
Sunset and the day's rhythm
Near the equator, Singapore's sunset hardly moves through the year. Our calculation gives 6:51 PM on Monday 9 November and 6:53 PM on Monday 23 November 2026, so expect sunset at about the same time on Nagula Chavithi. Confirm on Drik Panchang if you need the exact minute.
A fast that runs until sunset is long in Singapore, so many families end the fast after the morning puja and keep the evening for a lamp and family prayer.
Fasting in the wet season
November in Singapore is usually hot, humid and wet, with heavy afternoon thunderstorms. Dehydration comes on fast. A milk-and-fruit fast until the puja is a gentle choice. Elders, diabetics, people with heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant or nursing women, children and anyone on regular medicine should consult a doctor first, and anyone who feels faint should eat.
Explaining Nagula Chavithi to children
Singapore children often visit nature reserves and the zoo, and learn about local wildlife in school. Explain that Hindus see the divine in all creatures, that serpents keep nature in balance, and that on this day mothers pray especially for their children. Then make the rule clear: we pray to the Naga devata at home, and we never disturb a real snake. Drawing the rice-flour naga together makes it fun.
Practical tips
- Friday is a working and school day. A short morning puja is enough.
- Singapore is ahead of India, so your relatives will begin their puja after you. A mid-morning video call can catch theirs.
- Buy sesame, jaggery and rice flour in Little India during Deepavali week.
Frequently asked questions
When is Nagula Chavithi 2026 in Singapore?
Our ephemeris calculation gives Friday 13 November 2026. It was worked out with the same rules Drik Panchang uses, but it is a calculation, so please confirm it on Drik Panchang with Singapore selected.
Is it the same day as India?
Yes. India keeps Nagula Chavithi on Friday 13 November too. Singapore is two and a half hours ahead of India, so your festival morning starts first. Families in the USA and Canada keep it a day earlier, on Thursday 12 November.
What is the puja time in Singapore?
We do not give a clock-time muhurat. A morning puja is traditional. For an exact window, check Drik Panchang for Singapore, and do not use India's timings.
Can I offer milk at a snake hole in a park or nature reserve?
No. Singapore's wildlife is protected, and snakes, including pythons, live in parks and green corridors. Snakes don't need milk, and leaving food in parks is not allowed. Keep the offering at home.
Can I light a lamp in the HDB corridor?
It is better not to. Keep the lamp inside your flat, away from curtains, and never leave it unattended. An LED diya is a safe alternative.
Who should avoid a strict fast?
Elders, diabetics, people with heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant or nursing women, children and anyone on regular medicine should consult a doctor first. In the humid heat, drink water.
