Anisha (अनीश, IAST: Anīśa) is an Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “The supreme Lord; one who has no lord above”. From a- (without) and īśa (lord, master), Anīśa declares that Vishnu alone stands sovereign over all — no higher authority governs or constrains Him.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The word īśa is derived from the root īś, meaning 'to rule' or 'to be master,' and is one of the principal Vedic words for the Divine. When prefixed with a-, it yields the paradoxical name 'one who has no master,' meaning Vishnu is the ultimate sovereign of the cosmos with no superior. All other lords — including Brahmā and Śiva — exist within and under His overarching lordship.

Anīśa occurs in the Vishnu Sahasranama as a mark of Vishnu's absolute supremacy; note that while Anisha is common as a feminine name in modern usage, here it is a masculine divine epithet, pronounced uh-NEE-shuh.
