Apara (अपार, IAST: Apāra) is an Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Shoreless, fathomless, without the far bank”. From a- (not) and pāra (the far shore, boundary), Apāra images Vishnu as an ocean of being so vast that no opposite bank is ever reached — His nature is immeasurable depth in every direction.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The word pāra denotes 'the further shore' or 'the limit of crossing,' as used in the image of crossing a river or ocean. Prefixed by a-, Apāra means there is no further shore to be found — Vishnu is limitless in His being and His mercy. Devotional poetry often celebrates Him as an ocean (sāgara) precisely because an ocean at least has shores, whereas Apāra Vishnu exceeds even that metaphor.

Apāra is used as an epithet in Vaishnava stotras and Purāṇic hymns; as a given name it has a rare, contemplative quality and is pronounced uh-PAA-ruh.
