Uchchaihshrava (उच्चैःश्रव, IAST: Uccaiḥśrava) is an Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “One who hears on high; the celestial white horse”. From uccaiḥ (on high, loudly) and śrava (hearing, ear, fame), Uccaiḥśrava is the magnificent white horse born from the churning of the cosmic ocean, representing divine purity and royal splendour.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Uccaiḥśrava is the legendary seven-headed white horse that emerged from the churning of the Milky Ocean (Kṣīrasāgara-manthana), regarded as the king of all horses and the mount of Indra. The name may be interpreted as 'one whose ears are held high' (alert, nobly erect) or 'whose fame resounds on high,' both readings conveying supreme excellence. Viṣṇu is identified with Uccaiḥśrava in the Bhagavad Gītā (10.27) as the divine vibhūti among horses, declaring His glory manifest in creation's finest.

This epithet is invoked both for Viṣṇu and for the divine horse Uccaiḥśrava himself in Vaishnava scripture. Pronounced uch-CHAIH-śra-va, it is occasionally used as a traditional masculine name, though its compound length makes it more common as a devotional title.
