Chamundi (चामुण्डी, IAST: cāmuṇḍī) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “The fierce goddess who slew Chanda and Munda”. A fierce form of Devi whose name records her victory over the asura twins Chanda and Munda; one of the Sapta Matrikas.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Chamundi (चामुण्डी) — also written Chamunda — takes her very name from her victory: in the Devi Mahatmyam she slays the asura twins Chanda and Munda who had been sent against her by the demon-king Shumbha. Kali, born from the brow of Durga, beheads them both and brings their heads to the great Goddess; from that moment on the form is called Chāmuṇḍā.

In Karnataka the goddess is supreme on the Chamundi Hills overlooking Mysuru, where the Chamundeshwari Temple has been continuously worshipped for over a thousand years. The Wodeyar kings of Mysuru consider her their kuladevata. The annual Mysuru Dasara — among the grandest in India — culminates with her processional darshan.

Chamundi is one of the Sapta Matrikas (the seven mother goddesses) and one of the Mahavidyas. She is fierce in defence of her devotees and absolute in her vanquishing of evil.

A baby girl named Chamundi is named with a wish for fierce protection — for herself, for her family, and for the dharma she will grow up to defend. Pair with surnames from the Mysuru/South-Indian tradition or with bhakti-tradition names (Devi, Amma).

Astrology — nakshatra & rashi

By the standard Vedic correspondence between the first syllable of a name and the lunar mansion (nakshatra), Chamundi aligns with the Revati nakshatra, under the Meena rashi (Moon sign).
