Kamapujita (कामपूजिता, IAST: Kāmapūjitā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She who is worshipped by Kama, the god of love”. Kāmapūjitā — 'she who is adored by Kāma (Manmatha)' — elevates Lalitā above the god of love himself, for even Kāma, who enchants all beings, bows at her feet in reverence, acknowledging her as the source of all beauty and desire.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Kāma, or Manmatha, is the lord of love and longing in Hindu mythology; that he himself worships Lalitā is a statement of cosmic hierarchy in which the power that animates all erotic and spiritual desire is itself a derivative and devotee of the supreme Goddess. This is deeply significant in the Śrīvidyā tradition, which regards kāma not as an obstacle to liberation but, when properly understood and sublimated, as the very fuel of devotion (bhakti-rasa); Lalitā as Kāmapūjitā is thus the ultimate object of all longing, sacred and mundane. The name also echoes the theology of the Kāmakala form of Lalitā, in which the triangle of desire (kāma) is itself a sacred geometric expression of the Goddess.

Kāmapūjitā appears in several Śākta stotras and the Lalitā Sahasranāma as a title affirming Lalitā's sovereignty over all the lower divinities; as a given name, Kamapujita is rare in daily use but Kāmākhyā and Kāmākṣī — related names — are widely used across India. Pronunciation: kaa-ma-poo-JI-taa.
