Griha Pravesh (housewarming ceremony) is performed when a family enters a new home for the first time, to invoke divine blessings so that the house brings happiness, peace and prosperity. Many NRIs perform it when they buy or move into a new home — here is a simple, practical guide to doing it at home.

Best Time for Griha Pravesh

  • Choose a Shubh Muhurat; auspicious months traditionally include Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Magha and Phalguna.
  • Many avoid Chaturmas for a full ceremony if following strict tradition.
  • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are generally considered favourable.
  • Check a reliable panchang/app or consult a purohit for the exact muhurtam.

Items (Samagri)

  • A Kalash (copper/silver pot), coconut and mango leaves
  • A new cloth, rice, turmeric, kumkum and flowers
  • Fruits and sweets (naivedyam), betel leaves & nuts
  • Lamp, incense and camphor

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Clean the entire house; take a head-bath and wear traditional clothes.
  2. Spread rice near the main entrance and place the Kalash (filled with water, mango leaves and a coconut) on it; decorate with cloth, flowers, turmeric and kumkum.
  3. Light the lamp and incense; first invoke Lord Ganesha — "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha".
  4. Perform a gentle abhishekam to the Kalash; offer flowers, fruits and sweets.
  5. Chant the Lakshmi mantra "Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamalalaye Namaha"; recite the Satyanarayana Katha if doing a full puja.
  6. Perform aarti with camphor; break the coconut and share as prasadam.
  7. The eldest family member enters first with the right foot; sprinkle holy water in the corners and light lamps in each room.

A Simple Version for Busy NRIs

  1. Clean the house; light a lamp in the main area.
  2. Offer flowers, fruits and sweets to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
  3. Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha" and "Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamalalaye Namaha" 11 or 21 times.
  4. Perform a short aarti and share sweets.

Tips for NRIs

  • Most items are available at Indian grocery stores or online in the USA/UK/Canada/Australia.
  • If a Kalash is unavailable, a small silver bowl — or photos of Ganesha and Lakshmi — can be used.
  • A simple version is acceptable even in a rented home; involve children in the puja.

Note: vidhi and muhurtam vary by region and tradition; for an important ceremony, confirm with your family purohit.
