Maraka Dashas

Maraka Dashas are among the most carefully examined subjects in Vedic astrology. Nowadays, many people frighten others by declaring that the moment the Dasha of the 2nd lord or the 7th lord begins, it is automatically a "Maraka Dasha." However, this is not the complete method taught by Maharshi Parashara. According to the Parashara system, the first step is to determine longevity (Ayurdaya). One should never decide about Maraka effects without first determining whether the native has short life (Alpayu), medium life (Madhyayu), or full life (Purnayu).

The 2nd house and the 7th house are considered Maraka houses. Their lords are regarded as the primary Maraka planets. However, the Dasha of every 2nd lord or 7th lord does not necessarily result in death. They merely possess Maraka potential. According to Maharshi Parashara, the 2nd lord, the 7th lord, planets associated with them by conjunction, planets receiving their aspect, and planets placed in the 2nd or 7th houses can produce Maraka influences.

However, certain conditions must be present for a Maraka Dasha to produce its full effect. The native's lifespan should be approaching its completion. Planetary transits must support the event. The 8th house and its lord should be weak. There should be no Arishta Bhanga Yogas (combinations that cancel misfortune). For natives blessed with a full lifespan, Maraka Dashas often do not cause death. Instead, they may result in severe health problems, surgeries, retirement, or the conclusion of an important phase of life.

For those with a medium lifespan, Maraka influences may become somewhat stronger. For those with a short lifespan, if the Maraka planet's Dasha or Antardasha becomes active near the completion of their destined lifespan, it may indicate life-threatening situations. One important principle of astrology should always be remembered: a strong Maraka planet is not always harmful. In many cases, it can also grant wealth, family expansion, marriage, property, and other favorable results. Maraka is only one of its responsibilities; it does not manifest in every Dasha.

If the lord of the 8th house and the Maraka lord are connected with each other, the Maraka influence becomes stronger. On the other hand, if they receive the benefic aspect of Jupiter or Venus, the adverse effects may be significantly reduced. According to the Parashara tradition, the following factors must be examined before concluding about a Maraka period:

  • Longevity assessment (Ayurdaya)
  • Strength of the 8th house
  • Condition of the 8th lord
  • Strength of the 2nd and 7th house lords
  • Dasha and Antardasha
  • Transits of Saturn and Jupiter
  • Presence of Arishta Bhanga Yogas

Without following this sequence, declaring a Maraka period merely by observing the Dasha of a single planet is not supported by the scriptures.

According to the teachings of Maharshi Parashara, an astrologer should never frighten people. Instead, an astrologer should examine the horoscope according to scriptural principles and, if afflictions are present, guide the native with appropriate remedial measures.

Therefore, simply saying "A Maraka Dasha has begun" is not the final conclusion. Only after answering the following questions should a judgment be made:

  • Has the destined lifespan come to its completion?
  • Has the Maraka Yoga become active?
  • Are there any Arishta Bhanga Yogas that can mitigate the effects?

Only then should a proper conclusion be reached.
