Quick answer: Friday 4 December 2026 is Utpanna Ekadashi. In Hyderabad, Krishna Ekadashi prevails from sunrise (06:32 AM) and ends at 11:44 PM IST; the nakshatra is Hasta until 10:22 AM, then Chitra. Devotees fast or eat simply, worship Lord Vishnu, and break the fast on Dwadashi, Saturday 5 December.

Utpanna Ekadashi has a special place among the 24 Ekadashis of the year: it is the Ekadashi whose story explains where the vrat itself came from. This year it falls on a Friday in the closing week of Karthika Masam, so the day carries both the glow of Karthika lamps and the quiet discipline of Ekadashi. If you have ever wanted to begin keeping Ekadashi, many elders say there is no better day to start.

Ekadashi runs almost the whole civil day, ending late at night, so in Hyderabad there is no doubt about the fasting day. Dwadashi then prevails at sunrise on Saturday, which is the parana (fast-breaking) day.

Religious significance of Utpanna Ekadashi

The story is told in the traditional Ekadashi vrat katha, in which Lord Krishna explains the vrat to Yudhishthira. A powerful demon named Mura troubled the devas. Lord Vishnu fought him for a long time and then withdrew to rest in a cave. As Mura approached the sleeping Lord, a radiant goddess arose from Vishnu's own power and destroyed the demon. Pleased, Vishnu named her Ekadashi, since she appeared on the eleventh tithi, and declared that those who honour this tithi with fasting and prayer would be dear to him.

That is why the day is called Utpanna, 'born'. The teaching inside the story is simple: the strength to overcome inner obstacles such as greed, anger and restlessness comes from the Lord himself, and the Ekadashi fast is a way of making room for that strength.

Calendars name the month differently. In the Telugu amanta calendar this is Kartika Krishna Ekadashi; in the purnimanta calendar of North India it is Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi. The date is the same. The next Ekadashi is the great Mokshada or Vaikuntha Ekadashi on 20 December, covered in our Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi 2026 guide.

Simple puja vidhi at home

  1. Bathe early and wear clean clothes. In Karthika many families still take the pre-dawn bath and light a lamp.
  2. Place a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu, Krishna or Venkateswara on a clean cloth. Light a ghee or oil lamp and incense.
  3. Offer tulasi leaves (plucked the day before, as many families avoid plucking tulasi on Ekadashi), flowers, water and fruit.
  4. Chant the mantra below 108 times, or read the Vishnu Sahasranama if that is your practice.
  5. Read or listen to the Utpanna Ekadashi katha with the family.
  6. In the evening, light a lamp again; it is still Karthika Masam, so a lamp near tulasi or at the doorway is a lovely addition.

No materials? Sit quietly facing east, fold your hands, and repeat the Lord's name for ten minutes. Ekadashi is about remembrance, and a sincere prayer is complete in itself. Essentials are cleanliness, a lamp if possible, and attention; elaborate offerings are optional customs.

Mantra for the day

Oṁ Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya

Meaning: 'Salutations to Bhagavan Vasudeva', the Lord who dwells in all beings. This twelve-syllable mantra is one of the best-known Vishnu mantras and is widely chanted on Ekadashi. Chant it slowly, with attention, rather than for any particular result.

Vrat and fasting guidance

Customs range from a nirjala fast (no water) to a phalahar fast of fruit, milk and nuts, to a single simple meal without grains and pulses. Rice is avoided by almost everyone who keeps Ekadashi. The fast is broken on Dwadashi, Saturday 5 December, after sunrise and within the parana window given in your local panchang; Drik Panchang lists the parana on that day.

Fasting is a devotional offering, not an obligation. Elders, pregnant women, children and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure or another medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor; a light satvik meal with prayer is a perfectly valid way to keep the day.

What you can do today

  • Keep a fast that suits your health, or simply skip rice and eat satvik food.
  • Read the Utpanna Ekadashi katha aloud after the morning puja.
  • Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times, morning or evening.
  • Offer a Karthika lamp at dusk; only a few days of Karthika Masam remain before Amavasya on 8 December.
  • Give food or grains to someone in need, or donate to a temple annadanam.
  • Spend some time away from screens and gossip; many elders treat Ekadashi as a day of quieter speech.
  • Prepare the parana meal in advance so you can break the fast on time on Saturday.

For families and children

Children love the Utpanna story because it has a hero they did not expect: a goddess who appears exactly when she is needed. Tell it as a bedtime story and ask them what 'demons' they would like help with, such as fear of exams or losing their temper. Young children should not fast; let them help pluck flowers the day before, arrange fruit on the plate, or ring the bell during aarti.
