Swami Vivekananda – Short Biography

A true inspiration for all, a person who spread the culture and promoted Hinduism, a great leader, speaker and divine person – Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda was a great social reformer and an inspiring person. His sayings, his books still serve as teachings for many youngsters. Vivekananda was called by the name Narendra or Narendranath Datta officially. This great personality was born in Kolkata on the 12th of January in 1863 to Vishwanath Datta and Bhuvaneshwari Devi. His father was a successful lawyer at that time. Narendra used to practice meditation for hours even from his adolescence and was also associated with Brahmo Movement for some time. It was a theistic movement in Hindusim that happened in Kolkata.

At the start, young Narendra had to pass through a period of spiritual crisis when he was plagued by doubts about the existence of God. He was a bright student who studied almost all the books available to him to find the answer to his mystery query. In the month of November in 1881, Narendra went to meet Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who was staying at the Maha Kali Temple in Dakshineshwar. He got his answer when Ramakrishna asked him to close his eyes and pray with all trust, he witnessed some energy in the form of God. Narendra then became a frequent visitor to Dakshineshwar Matt and under the guidance of the Ramakrishna, he made rapid walks on the spiritual path and belief in God.

After a few years, two events took place which shook Narendra’s heart into distress, the sudden death of his father in the year 1884 and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in the year 1886. Swami Vivekananda left Baranagar Math In the middle of 1890 and started on a long journey to explore and discover India, people and their lifestyle, struggles and mythological tales. He went on a journey all over the country, studying the circumstances of the people. Wherever he went, his fascinating personality created a great impression of positivity among people.

Vivekananda decided to attend the World Parliament of Religions in order to spread his message in the West about Hinduism which was scheduled to be held in Chicago in the year 1893. On the eve of his flight, he adopted the name Swami Vivekananda by King Khetri. His speeches at the World’s Parliament of Religions held in September 1893 made him famous as an ‘orator by religious right’ and as a ‘Messenger of Indian wisdom to the Western world’. For three years he spread the Vedanta and Hindu philosophy and religion to the people of America and England and then returned to India. He found the Sri Ramakrishna Math and Mission on May 1st, 1897. He also established Belur Math in the year 1898.

In June 1899 he left India for a second visit to the West part of the world. He returned to Belur Math in December of the year 1900. He spent the rest of his life in India, motivating and guiding people. He has dedicated his entire life to leading others to the sinless and true spiritual path. His health worsened and Swami Vivekananda took his last breath on 4 July in 1902 at the Belur Math, leaving behind an eminent legacy not just in the hearts of his fellows, but for all generations to come.
