Quick answer: Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, when Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening (Drik Panchang). In many Hindu homes the women of the family lead the puja, though traditions vary. A simple plan: clean and decorate in the week before, light the lamp on Dhanteras (Friday 6 November), take the early oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi, and perform Lakshmi Puja within your city's muhurat on Sunday evening. In New Delhi that is 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM local time, per Drik Panchang.

This guide covers the home puja role, a preparation timeline, first-Diwali customs, South Indian vrats, decorating ideas, a plan for working women and tips for women celebrating abroad.

Women and the household Lakshmi Puja

Goddess Lakshmi is honoured as the goddess of prosperity, auspiciousness and the well-being of the home. In many households, especially in North and West India, the lady of the house is seen as Griha Lakshmi, the Lakshmi of the home, and she leads or co-leads the evening puja. In other families the eldest member, the couple together or a family priest performs it. None of these is more correct than the other; follow your family's custom.

A simple role for the person leading the puja:

  • Prepare the altar: a clean cloth on a low table, images or idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash with water, and the lamp.
  • Keep the samagri ready on one plate: kumkum, haldi, rice (akshat), flowers, incense, a ghee lamp, sweets, fruit and a few coins.
  • Begin with Ganesha, then offer to Lakshmi: water, kumkum, flowers, lamp, naivedya and aarti.
  • Invite every family member, including children, to offer a flower and do aarti.
  • Light the diyas around the home after the puja, starting at the altar and the main door.

The full steps are in the Lakshmi Puja vidhi 2026 step-by-step guide, the samagri list is in Lakshmi Ganesh puja vidhi and samagri 2026, and the aarti text is on Maha Lakshmi aarti lyrics.

First Diwali after marriage

Customs vary widely by region and community, so treat this as a general picture rather than a rule:

  • In many North Indian families the new bride celebrates her first Diwali with her in-laws and is invited to take part in, or lead, the Lakshmi Puja.
  • In some families the couple visits the bride's parents during the festival, and gifts of clothes, sweets or utensils are exchanged.
  • In parts of South India, especially Tamil Nadu, Thalai Deepavali (the first Deepavali after marriage) is traditionally celebrated at the bride's parental home.
  • Many couples now combine traditions, celebrating Dhanteras or Lakshmi Puja with one family and Bhai Dooj with the other.

The simplest advice: ask both families early, and agree a plan that respects both.

Kedar Gauri vrat and Deepavali nombu

In parts of South India, many women observe Kedar Gauri vrat, known in Tamil homes as Kedara Gowri Nombu, on Deepavali Amavasya, which is Sunday 8 November 2026 in India. Many Telugu families observe a related Kedareswara vratam (nomu) around Deepavali, with practices that vary from family to family. Women often fast, worship Shiva and Parvati and tie a sacred thread. See Kedar Gauri vrat 2026: Deepavali nombu for the story and method, and Telugu Deepavali 2026 traditions for Telugu customs.

Dhanteras purchases: a tradition, not a rule

Many families buy gold, silver, a new utensil or a broom on Dhanteras, seen as inviting prosperity into the home. It is a custom, not an obligation. If money is tight, light the Yama Deepam, clean the home and offer a lamp to Lakshmi; that is the heart of the day. Read more on Dhanteras 2026: date, puja and Yama Deepam.

Dress, rangoli and diya ideas

  • Wear what you feel festive in: a silk or cotton saree, a lehenga, a salwar suit, or simple new or freshly washed clothes. Many families favour bright colours such as red, yellow, pink or green for the puja.
  • Choose cotton or silk near lamps; avoid loose synthetic dupattas near diyas.
  • Draw small Lakshmi footprints from the door to the altar in rice paste or chalk, a common custom in many homes.
  • Group painted clay diyas on a brass plate, or float flowers and tealights in a bowl of water.
  • Find designs in Diwali rangoli designs 2026 and Diwali decoration and diya ideas.

A 5-day plan for working women

  • Fri 6 Nov (Dhanteras): a working day for most. Light one lamp and the Yama Deepam after work; skip big shopping.
  • Sat 7 Nov: your main prep day. Make one sweet, set up the altar, finish rangoli outline.
  • Sun 8 Nov: early bath, rest in the afternoon, Lakshmi Puja in the muhurat, diyas, family dinner.
  • Mon 9 Nov: back to work; keep evening simple with leftovers and lamps.
  • Tue 10 and Wed 11 Nov: a small Annakut plate and Bhai Dooj tilak in the evening, or on the nearest free evening if family is far away.

Order sweets from a trusted local shop if cooking is not realistic. Lakshmi Puja does not depend on how many dishes you make.

For NRI women abroad

Diwali falls on a Sunday this year, which makes the main puja much easier to plan in the USA, Canada, the UK and elsewhere. A few practical notes:

  • In the USA, Canada and the UK, Naraka Chaturdashi is Saturday 7 November, so the oil bath falls on Saturday morning there.
  • Use your own city's muhurat: for example, 5:04 PM to 6:52 PM in New York City, 4:35 PM to 6:12 PM in London and 5:17 PM to 7:03 PM in Toronto (Drik Panchang).
  • In rentals and apartments, check smoke detectors and lease rules; LED diyas are a safe alternative indoors.
  • Bhai Dooj (Tuesday 10 November abroad) can be a video call with a tilak sent by post, or celebrated with cousins or friends nearby.
  • City-wise times: USA, UK, Canada.

Frequently asked questions

When is Lakshmi Puja 2026?

Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026 in India and also in the USA, Canada and the UK, per Drik Panchang. In New Delhi the Drik muhurat is 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM local time; other cities have their own local timings.

Does a woman have to lead the Lakshmi Puja?

No. Traditions vary. In many homes the lady of the house leads it, in others the eldest member or a couple performs it together, and in some a priest is invited. What matters most is devotion, a clean home and a calm, sincere puja.

What are common first Diwali after marriage traditions?

They vary a great deal by community. In some families the new bride celebrates her first Diwali with her in-laws and performs or joins her first Lakshmi Puja there; in others the couple visits the bride's parents, and gifts are exchanged. Ask the elders of both families what they usually do.

Is it necessary to buy gold or utensils on Dhanteras?

No. Buying gold, silver or a new utensil on Dhanteras is a popular tradition in many families, not a religious requirement. Many people simply buy a broom, a new diya or nothing at all, and light the Yama Deepam.

Can women observe the puja during menstruation?

Family customs differ on this, and there is no single rule followed by every Hindu community. Follow your own family's practice or ask a trusted elder or priest; many families today let women take part in the way they feel comfortable.

I live abroad. Which dates should I follow?

Diwali is Sunday 8 November in the USA, Canada and the UK too, but Drik Panchang lists Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November there. Always use your own city's local muhurat; never convert India's times.
