What is Hartalika Teej?

The name Hartalika comes from harit (kidnap / friend) + aalika (female friend). In the traditional story, Parvati's female companions "kidnap" her from her father Himavan's house and hide her in a forest so she can perform severe penance to win Shiva as her husband — bypassing her father's plan to marry her to Vishnu. The vrat commemorates Parvati's successful austerity and her marriage to Shiva.

Hartalika Teej is the third of the three great Bhadrapada Teej vrats:

  • Hariyali Teej — Shravana month, monsoon Teej.
  • Kajari Teej — Bhadrapada Krishna paksha (30 Aug 2026).
  • Hartalika Teej — Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya (10 Sep 2026, this article).

Who observes Hartalika Teej?

  • Married women: Pray for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands.
  • Unmarried girls: Pray for a good husband (traditionally at least 16 years of age or after menarche).
  • Widows in some traditions: Observe as pure Shiva-Parvati devotion, without marital petition.

The vrat is most rigorously observed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Nepal. In South Indian and Bengali traditions, Hartalika Teej is less common — regional equivalents are observed instead.

The Vrat — Nirjala Fasting Rules

Hartalika Teej is traditionally a nirjala vrat — no water, no food from sunrise on the vrat day until the vrat is broken the next morning after the pradosh puja and the following morning's snan (bath) + Shiva darshan.

  • No food, no water for approximately 24-30 hours
  • Sleep on the floor the night of the vrat
  • Wear new clothes — traditionally green (Parvati's colour) or red (marital colour)
  • Full mehndi on the hands the previous evening
  • Kajal, sindoor, bangles, mangalsutra worn if married
  • Break the fast on 11 September 2026 morning after sun-rise puja + naivedyam offering

Important health note: Nirjala fasting for 24-30 hours is physically demanding. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, diabetics, people on daily medication, and anyone with dehydration risk should follow modified fasting (phalahar — fruits + milk) or skip the fast entirely and observe only the puja. Consult your family elder and, where relevant, your doctor. Traditional practice does not require rigid nirjala for those it may harm.

Puja Vidhi — Step-by-Step

The main Hartalika Teej puja is performed at Pradosh kala — the twilight window between sunset and 2 hours after (approximately 6:30 PM to 8:45 PM IST on 10 September 2026).

  1. Preparation (afternoon 10 Sep): Bathe, wear the new clothes, prepare the puja space. Clean, decorate with rangoli.
  2. Idol preparation: Prepare small idols of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha using pure black clay (traditional) or use metal / stone idols if clay is unavailable. NRI substitute: pre-made idols from Indian grocery stores.
  3. Sthapana: Place a chowki (small wooden platform) at the puja spot. Cover with red or yellow cloth. Place a small kalash (pot) filled with Ganga jal at the centre; place the three idols in front.
  4. Sankalpam: Take a small handful of water + akshat + a leaf. Speak your intention (marital wellbeing / good husband). Release the water.
  5. Ganesha puja first: Offer flowers, akshat, durva grass, modak.
  6. Parvati puja: Offer green bangles, mehndi, sindoor, bindi, mangalsutra, comb, mirror, red-yellow cloth (chunari), 16 shringara items (solah shringar), sweets.
  7. Shiva puja: Offer white flowers, bel patra (bilva leaves), datura, dhatura fruit, bhasma (sacred ash), rudraksha, water abhishekam.
  8. Katha reading: Read/listen to the Hartalika Teej Vrat Katha (see full Vrat Katha article).
  9. Aarti: Aarti of Shiva-Parvati; distribute prasad to family.
  10. Night: Sleep on the floor. Do not eat or drink.
  11. Morning of 11 Sep: Bath, brief Shiva puja, offer naivedyam of khichdi + halwa. Break the fast.
