Quick answer: Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 UAE falls on Saturday 21 November 2026, the day of Tulasi Vivah and the Telugu Chilukuri Dwadashi puja. Devutthana Ekadashi is the day before, Friday 20 November. Both match India's dates.

These are Drik Panchang dates for the UAE and apply in every emirate. Since the UAE moved its weekend to Saturday and Sunday, the Dwadashi falls on a day off for most residents, and the weather in late November is finally pleasant enough for an evening puja on the balcony or in the villa garden.

The story behind the Dwadashi

Ksheerabdi Dwadashi is the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Karthika, and its name recalls the ksheera sagara, the ocean of milk. As commonly told, the churning of that ocean, which brought forth Lakshmi and the nectar of immortality, began on this day. That is why Telugu homes call it Chilukuri Dwadashi.

Families also believe that Vishnu, who wakes on Devutthana Ekadashi, comes with Lakshmi to the Brindavanam, the tulasi grove, on the Dwadashi. So tulasi is worshipped together with a branch of amla (usiri), Vishnu's symbol: the Tulasi-Damodara puja. Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian families in the Emirates often celebrate this season as Tulasi Vivah, the symbolic wedding of Tulasi to Vishnu as Shaligram or Krishna. In the legend as commonly told, Tulasi was the devoted Vrinda. Some communities hold the wedding on the Ekadashi, so follow your family custom.

A Tulasi puja for a UAE flat or villa

  • Choose the spot: a balcony, a villa courtyard or the puja corner indoors. Sweep the area and draw a small rangoli or muggu.
  • Decorate: turmeric and kumkum on the pot, a red thread, flowers and a small cloth.
  • Amla: Indian supermarkets in the UAE sometimes sell fresh amla in the cooler months. Place a branch if you can find one, or a few fruits, beside the plant with a Shaligram, Krishna idol or Vishnu picture.
  • Sankalpa: pray to Ganesha and make a simple resolution for the family.
  • Offer: fruit, jaggery and a simple sweet. Many families avoid plucking tulasi leaves on Ekadashi and Dwadashi, so pick any you need on Thursday.
  • Lamps and aarti: after sunset, light lamps around the plant, chant "Om Namo Narayanaya", do aarti and walk round the tulasi three times.

If you fasted on Friday, break the fast on Saturday morning; Drik Panchang gives the parana time for Dubai and other cities. Friday is still a working day for many people in the UAE, so a light fruit-and-milk fast is a practical choice.

Growing tulasi in the Gulf

In the UAE the seasons are the reverse of Europe and North America. Tulasi struggles in the fierce summer, not in winter. November is when a plant that survived the summer recovers, and it is the best time to start a new one.

  • Sun: morning sun is ideal. Even in November, the afternoon sun on a west-facing balcony can be harsh; a little shade helps.
  • Water: water when the top of the soil is dry. Balcony pots dry out quickly in wind, but avoid leaving water standing in the saucer.
  • Dust: rinse the leaves gently now and then after dusty or windy days so they can breathe.
  • Indoors: if the plant lives inside, keep it at a bright window and away from the direct blast of the air-conditioner, which dries the leaves.
  • Summer next year: move the pot to the shadiest, most sheltered spot from May and water more often. Many residents bring tulasi indoors for the hottest months.

Practical tips for UAE residents

  • Fire-safety rules in apartment towers and shared accommodation can be strict. Use LED diyas where open flames are not permitted, and never leave a lamp burning unattended on a balcony.
  • Be considerate of neighbours below when watering balcony pots after the puja.
  • Temples in Dubai and Abu Dhabi can be crowded on festival weekends. Check the temple's website for any timings, entry or booking rules before you go.
  • Families from India often visit in the cooler months. If grandparents are here, this is a lovely puja to do together.

Is the UAE date the same as India's?

What time is sunset in Dubai around Ksheerabdi Dwadashi?

Can tulasi grow on a Dubai balcony?

Yes, and November to March is the easiest time. Give it morning sun, some shade in the strongest afternoon light, and water when the top of the soil is dry. Summer is the hard season, not winter.

Can I light diyas in my building?

Many UAE buildings and shared accommodation have strict fire-safety rules and sensitive smoke detectors. Check your building rules; LED diyas are a safe alternative.

What is Chilukuri Dwadashi?

It is the Telugu name for Ksheerabdi Dwadashi, from the word for churning. As commonly told, the churning of the ocean of milk began on this day.
