Kalashtami — 7 July (Kala Bhairava)

Kalashtami, on the Krishna Ashtami tithi, is dedicated to Kala Bhairava, the fierce, protective form of Shiva who is the guardian of time and of Kashi. Devotees fast, worship Bhairava (often with a night vigil), and feed dogs — his vahana. It is sought for removal of fear, obstacles and negative influences.

Pradosh Vrat — Shani (11 July) & Ravi (26 July)

Pradosh Vrat falls on each Trayodashi (13th tithi) and is kept during pradosh kaal, the auspicious ~90 minutes around sunset. The weekday colours its benefit: Shani Pradosh (Saturday) is sought for relief from Saturn’s trials and for discipline; Ravi Pradosh (Sunday) for health, vitality and longevity. Worship is a sunset abhishekam of the Shivalinga with the Pradosh stotra.

Masik Shivaratri — 12 July

Masik Shivaratri, on Krishna Chaturdashi, is the monthly “night of Shiva” — a night of fasting, fourfold abhishekam and jagaran (vigil), a gentler monthly form of Maha Shivaratri. It is especially powerful for inner purification and devotion to Mahadeva.

Puja Vidhi (Common to All)

  1. Bathe and take a sankalpa for the vrat.
  2. Perform Shiva abhishekam — water, milk, honey, curd and bilva (bel) leaves.
  3. Offer white flowers, bhasma and a bel-patra trio; chant Om Namah Shivaya.
  4. For Pradosh, worship at sunset (pradosh kaal); for Shivaratri/Kalashtami, keep a night vigil.
  5. Recite the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra; conclude with aarti and prasadam.

Mantras

ॐ नमः शिवाय — Oṃ Namaḥ Śivāya (the Panchakshari).

Mahamrityunjaya: Oṃ Tryambakaṃ yajāmahe… — the death-conquering mantra (Rig Veda 7.59.12), for health and protection.

For Kalashtami: ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः — Oṃ Kālabhairavāya Namaḥ.

  • Play the Mahamrityunjaya 11 or 108 times during the day.
  • On Kalashtami, the compassionate custom of feeding street dogs travels anywhere.
