Sankashti Chaturthi — 3 July (Moonrise Vrat)
Sankashti (“deliverance from difficulties”) Chaturthi is among the most beloved Ganesha vrats. Devotees fast through the day and break it only after sighting the moon and offering arghya to Ganesha at night. Each month’s Sankashti has a name and a specific Ganesha form and katha; the Ashadha one is Krishnapingala. It is sought above all for the removal of obstacles and the fulfilment of sincere wishes.
Vinayaka Chaturthi — 17 July (Daytime Vrat)
Vinayaka Chaturthi, on the bright (Shukla) fourth, is the waxing-moon monthly Ganesha day, kept with a daytime fast and midday puja. (On Vinayaka Chaturthi the moon is traditionally NOT viewed, unlike Sankashti where moon-sighting is essential.)
Puja Vidhi
- Bathe and take a sankalpa; install or face a Ganesha murti/image.
- Offer durva grass (21 blades), red flowers, sindoor and modak/laddu as naivedyam.
- Chant Ganesha mantras and the Sankata Nashana Ganesha Stotra.
- For Sankashti: keep the fast until moonrise, offer arghya to the moon and Ganesha, then break the fast; for Vinayaka Chaturthi, complete the midday puja.
- Conclude with aarti (Sukhkarta Dukhharta) and share prasadam.
Mantras
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः — Oṃ Gaṃ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ — the principal Ganesha mantra.
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय — Vakratuṇḍa Mahākāya sūryakoṭi samaprabha | nirvighnaṃ kuru me deva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā — the universal obstacle-removing prayer.
How the Diaspora Can Keep the July Ganesha Vrats
- For Sankashti, look up your city’s moonrise time and plan the evening arghya around it.
- Make modak or laddu at home (or source from Indian sweet shops); offer durva grass — often available fresh or dried at Indian grocers.
- Keep a simple phalahar fast around the work day; break it as prescribed.
- Teach children the Vakratunda mantra — short, rhythmic and easy to learn.
