July 2026 brings two beloved Murugan observances for the Tamil diaspora — Masik Karthigai on 10 July (the monthly day of lamps) and Skanda Sashti on 18 July (the monthly Murugan vrat). This HinduTone guide covers both, with the Saravanabhava mantra and diaspora tips. See the month in the July 2026 festival calendar; last month’s guides are Masik Karthigai June 2026 and Skanda Sashti June 2026.

Masik Karthigai — 10 July (The Day of Lamps)

Masik Karthigai falls on the Krittika nakshatra day, sacred to Murugan (nursed by the six Krittika mothers) and to Shiva (the infinite column of light). At dusk, rows of oil lamps are lit at the altar, doorway and windows; simple naivedyam of pori and aval is offered. It is the monthly echo of the grand Karthigai Deepam.

Skanda Sashti — 18 July (The Murugan Vrat)

Skanda Sashti, on the Shukla Shashthi, is the monthly vrat to Murugan (Skanda, Kartikeya), commemorating his victory over the asura Surapadma. Devotees keep a fast, worship Murugan with red flowers and vibhuti, and recite the Kanda Sashti Kavacham. The grand six-day Skanda Sashti comes later, in the Tamil month of Aippasi (Oct–Nov).

Puja & Observance

  1. Masik Karthigai: light rows of oil (or ghee/LED) lamps at dusk; offer pori/aval; chant the Murugan and Shiva mantras.
  2. Skanda Sashti: take a sankalpa, keep a fruit fast, offer abhishekam/archana to Murugan, recite the Kanda Sashti Kavacham, and break the fast after evening puja.

Mantra

ॐ शरवणभवाय नमः — Oṃ Śaravaṇabhavāya Namaḥ — the principal Murugan mantra; chant 108 times. With “Vetri Vel! Veera Vel!” the traditional salute to his divine spear. For lamps, also ॐ नमः शिवाय.

How the Tamil Diaspora Can Observe

  • Light lamps at dusk on Masik Karthigai (ghee tealights or LED diyas are apartment-safe substitutes).
  • Keep a simple Skanda Sashti fruit fast; visit a local Murugan kovil where one exists (Toronto, London, Sydney, Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf).
  • Play a recorded Kanda Sashti Kavacham; children quickly learn its refrain.
  • Source vibhuti, sandal, lamp oil and cotton wicks from Indian grocers in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the July Skanda Sashti the big six-day festival?

No — the grand six-day Skanda Sashti (Soorasamharam) is in Aippasi (Oct–Nov). The July one is the monthly Shashthi vrat.

Can I use LED lamps for Masik Karthigai?

Traditional oil/ghee lamps are preferred, but where open flames are restricted, ghee tealights or LED diyas are an accepted practical substitute.
