Quick answer: In Canada, Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 is observed on Saturday 19 December 2026 by Smarta households and on Sunday 20 December 2026 by Vaishnava traditions, including ISKCON and Sri Vaishnava temples, according to Drik Panchang. The date is the same from Halifax to Vancouver; only the parana (fast-breaking) window on the following Dwadashi morning changes with local sunrise, so check it for your city on Drik Panchang.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also known as Mukkoti Ekadashi or Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, is the most important Ekadashi of the year for devotees of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the gate of Vaikuntha, Vishnu's eternal abode, opens on this day, and that a sincere fast brings moksha, liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
For Canada's diverse Hindu community, with roots in India, Sri Lanka, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji and beyond, the 2026 dates are convenient: both fall on a weekend in mid-December, ahead of the holiday rush. Unlike last year, it does not fall in the busy week between Christmas and New Year.

| Tradition | Fasting day (all of Canada) | Breaking the fast |
|---|---|---|
| Smarta | Saturday 19 December 2026 | Dwadashi morning; check your city on Drik Panchang |
| Vaishnava (ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava temples) | Sunday 20 December 2026 | Dwadashi morning; check your city on Drik Panchang |

Why Canada has two dates
Ekadashi is a lunar day that starts and ends at different clock times around the world. Hindu calendars decide the fasting day by the tithi present at local sunrise. Smarta calendars fast on the day Ekadashi prevails at sunrise. Vaishnava calendars are stricter: if the previous tithi, Dashami, still touches arunodaya, the period of about an hour and a half before sunrise, that Ekadashi is treated as "mixed" and the fast moves to the following day.
Because of where Canada sits relative to India, this rule splits the observance in 2026. Follow the tradition of your family or the temple you attend. Many Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayali families who worship at Venkateswara or Vishnu temples will follow the Sri Vaishnava date; ISKCON devotees follow the Vaishnava date; many North Indian and Indo-Caribbean families follow their pandit's Smarta calendar. If you are unsure, ask your priest.
City guide: time zones and what to check
The fasting date is identical across the country. Use this table to know which time zone your calendar should be set to when you look up the parana window.
| City | Time zone | What to check on Drik Panchang |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Ottawa | Eastern (EST) | Parana window for your city |
| Montreal | Eastern (EST) | Parana window for Montreal |
| Halifax | Atlantic (AST) | Parana window for Halifax |
| Winnipeg | Central (CST) | Parana window for Winnipeg |
| Calgary, Edmonton | Mountain (MST) | Parana window for your city |
| Vancouver, Surrey, Victoria | Pacific (PST) | Parana window for your city |
Do not convert India's published times to Canadian time. Ekadashi and parana are always calculated from your own local sunrise.
Significance: why this is the most powerful Ekadashi
Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in the solar month of Dhanu (Margazhi in Tamil). In 2026 it coincides with Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, known as Mokshada Ekadashi, and with Gita Jayanti, the day the Bhagavad Gita was spoken on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
- The gate of Vaikuntha (Vaikunta Dwaram) symbolically opens for devotees
- Fasting on this day is said to carry the merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis
- Sincere observance is believed to remove the sins of many lifetimes
- It brings the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi for peace and purity
The story of Goddess Ekadashi
The Padma Purana relates that the demon Mura terrorised the devas. Lord Vishnu fought him and then rested in a cave. As Mura approached to strike, a shining goddess emerged from Vishnu and slew him. Vishnu named her Ekadashi and promised that those who fasted on her day would be freed from sin.
King Ambarisha and parana
The Bhagavata Purana tells how King Ambarisha, a devoted Ekadashi observer, faced the anger of the sage Durvasa for breaking his fast with a sip of water when the parana window was ending. Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra protected the king. The lesson for every devotee is that breaking the fast on time is part of the vow.
Tirumala and Srirangam
At Tirumala, the Vaikunta Dwaram opens in the early hours of Vaikuntha Ekadashi and TTD keeps it open for ten days. At Srirangam, the Paramapada Vasal opens on Vaikuntha Ekadashi. TTD has not announced the 2026 schedule or token system yet; Canadian families planning a December trip to India should wait for the official announcement.
Fasting rules for Canadian Hindus
The fast runs from sunrise on Ekadashi until parana on the Dwadashi morning. Choose a level that suits your health.
- Nirjala: no food or water. For healthy, experienced adults only.
- Phalahari: fruits, milk, yogurt, nuts and water. The most common choice.
- Ekadashi meal: simple grain-free food once or twice. Ideal for elders, children and anyone on medication.
Avoid
- Rice, wheat and all grains
- Lentils, dals and beans
- Onion and garlic
- Meat, fish, eggs and alcohol
Allowed
- Fruits, nuts, milk, yogurt and paneer
- Potatoes, sweet potatoes and sabudana
- Kuttu (buckwheat) and singhara flour, where your tradition permits
- Makhana, coconut and rock salt
South Asian grocers in the GTA, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and the Lower Mainland stock Ekadashi staples in December. For menu ideas, see our Ekadashi fasting recipes guide.
Home puja step by step
- Wake before sunrise, bathe and wear clean clothes
- Take a sankalpa for the Vaikuntha Ekadashi vrat in front of your home altar
- Light a ghee lamp and offer tulsi leaves, flowers, fruit and milk to Lord Vishnu, Venkateswara or Krishna
- Chant Om Namo Narayanaya or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and, for Gita Jayanti, read a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita
- Offer naivedya of fruit or milk and perform aarti morning and evening
- Keep jagaran at night with bhajans and Vishnu stories, as far as you are able
Canada's long December nights make an evening of bhajans at home very natural. If staying up all night is not practical, extend your evening prayers and rise early for Dwadashi.
Temples and community observances
Many Canadian Hindus observe Vaikuntha Ekadashi at home, while others visit their local temple for kirtan, discourses and prasadam. ISKCON Toronto, ISKCON Vancouver (the Hare Krishna temple in Burnaby) and ISKCON Calgary observe the Vaishnava date with kirtan and Ekadashi programmes. Venkateswara and Vishnu temples in the GTA, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton and Metro Vancouver serve South Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil communities, often with special alankaram and bhajans. Indo-Caribbean mandirs hold their own satsangs.
Each temple announces its own 2026 programme, usually in early December. Check the temple website before you go, allow extra driving time for snow and icy roads, and dress warmly if there is an outdoor queue.
Breaking the fast (parana)
Break the fast on Dwadashi morning, after sunrise and within the window your calendar gives, avoiding Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi. Check the window for your city on Drik Panchang or with your temple priest.
- Offer the first portion to the Lord before eating
- Start with water, tulsi water or fruit
- Follow with a light sattvic meal
- Give food or charity to someone in need
Tips for Canadian families
- Plan fasting meals a few days ahead; grocery stores get busy before the holidays
- Involve children with tulsi offerings, lamp lighting and the Mura story
- For elders, choose a light fast and keep them warm and hydrated
- If you work a weekend shift, a fruit fast with morning and evening prayer is fully valid
- Note Utpanna Ekadashi on Friday 4 December 2026, two weeks earlier. See our Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 guide.
Frequently asked questions
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Canada?
According to Drik Panchang for Canadian cities, Smarta households fast on Saturday 19 December 2026 and Vaishnava traditions, including ISKCON and Sri Vaishnava temples, fast on Sunday 20 December 2026. In India it falls on Sunday 20 December.
Is the date different in Vancouver and Toronto?
No. The Smarta and Vaishnava dates are the same across Canada. What differs from city to city is local sunrise, so the parana window on the Dwadashi morning is different in every city. Check your own city on Drik Panchang.
What time should I break the fast in Canada?
Parana is done on the Dwadashi morning after your fast, after sunrise and outside Hari Vasara. We do not publish times; look up the parana window for your city on Drik Panchang or ask your temple. Do not use India times converted to Canadian time.
Can I watch the Tirumala Vaikunta Dwaram opening from Canada?
The Tirumala gate opens in the early hours of Vaikuntha Ekadashi in India, which is the previous day in Canada. TTD has not yet announced its 2026 schedule, so check TTD's official channels in December for broadcast details.
Is it safe to fast in a Canadian winter?
A full waterless fast is demanding in very cold weather. Most families choose a fruit-and-milk fast, keep warm drinks such as hot milk or ginger water handy if their tradition permits, and avoid long outdoor waits on an empty stomach. Anyone with a health condition should consult a doctor first.
Editor's note (5 October 2026)
This guide has been fully revised for 2026. Dates follow Drik Panchang for Canada: Saturday 19 December for Smarta households and Sunday 20 December for Vaishnava traditions. We have removed last year's dates, tithi times, sunrise times and parana times. We do not publish 2026 parana times here; please check your city on Drik Panchang or with your temple, and confirm temple programmes directly with the temple. Om Namo Narayanaya.
