Purna (पूर्ण, IAST: Pūrṇa) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu boy-name meaning “Complete, full, perfect, lacking nothing”. From the root pṛ (to fill), pūrṇa means that which is absolutely full, the Lord who is perfect wholeness from which nothing is absent and to which nothing can be added.

Meaning, etymology & significance

Pūrṇa is one of the most celebrated Vedantic epithets, immortalized in the Īśopaniṣad's declaration that the whole arises from the whole and the whole remains. As a name of Vishnu, it affirms that He is the infinite plenum — complete in knowledge, bliss, power, and being — contrasting with all finite beings whose existence is marked by incompleteness.

Pūrṇa is borne as an epithet by Vishnu, Brahma, and various sages whose names reflect divine completeness; it is a time-honored given name pronounced 'POOR-nah,' sometimes anglicized as Poorna.
