Bhojeshwar Temple, at Bhojpur in Raisen district about 28 km from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, is an incomplete 11th-century Hindu temple to Shiva commissioned by Raja Bhoj. It is known for one of the largest Shiva lingas in the world, carved from a single stone, according to the Raisen district administration.
Faith & Tradition
The district administration gives the linga's height as over 7.5 feet and its circumference as 17.8 feet, set on a massive platform of polished stone; the temple was built without mortar. It stands near the Betwa river.
The annual Bhojpur Utsav cultural festival is held near the temple; in 2013 the singer Kailash Kher performed there, the Times of India reported.
Heritage
The Archaeological Survey of India, which protects the monument as the 'Bhojpur Savite Temple', dates it to the Paramara period. It was notified as a protected monument in 1951.
The temple is square in plan, with a sanctum of exterior dimension 20.12 m. Inside, four massive pillars 12.18 m high support an incomplete but richly carved shikhara (ASI).
