Hinduism Today reported that it was built with guidance from the original Madurai temple (Hinduism Today). It serves families from many South Indian communities, hosting weddings, naming ceremonies and festivals tied to the Hindu calendar, along with scripture classes and meditation sessions (Houstonia).

History of Sri Meenakshi Temple (Sri Meenakshi Devasthanam), Pearland

According to Houstonia, a small group of Indian immigrants bought a two-acre plot in 1977, and the temple complex was completed in 1982. Community Impact says the site has served as a place of worship since 1978, and that the original structure was a Ganesh temple built in the late 1970s. Hinduism Today reports the Ganesh sanctum was consecrated in 1979 and the main temple built in 1982.

In November 2013 the original Ganesh shrine was rebuilt with a granite sanctum, a vimanam and a granite gopuram at the entrance, in a project designed by Padmashree Muthiah Stapathi, with consecration on 29 November 2013 (Hinduism Today, reporting Indo American News). Houstonia says community donations funded construction over many years, and that the founders faced local opposition.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple is built in South Indian (Dravidian) style, with a gopuram and carved pillars, and Houstonia says the stonework and sculpture follow the Shilpa Shastras. Visit Pearland reports the granite was imported from India. ABC13 reports that stone artisans (shilpis) trained in India work at the temple and make many of its stone pieces in-house.
