Religious significance
Pradosham: Shiva's twilight
Pradosh Vrat is kept on Trayodashi in both fortnights, with worship in the pradosha kala, the twilight after sunset. As commonly told, when the gods and asuras churned the ocean of milk, the deadly Halahala poison rose first, and Shiva drank it to protect the worlds; it was at the evening twilight of Trayodashi that he danced in joy before Nandi, and so this hour became sacred to him. Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana traditions praise Pradosh worship. In Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states, temples hold abhishekam to Nandi and Shiva at Pradosham, and devotees watch the lingam between Nandi's horns.
Why a Sunday Pradosh is special
Each weekday gives the Pradosh a flavour: Soma Pradosh on Monday, Shani Pradosh on Saturday, and Ravi Pradosh on Sunday. Because Sunday belongs to Surya, devotees often offer water to the Sun in the morning and Shiva puja at dusk, praying for health and vitality.
Vishweshwara Vrat and the days ahead
Vishweshwara is Shiva as Lord of the universe, the presiding deity of Kashi Vishwanath. Drik lists Vishweshwara Vrat today, and customs differ by region, so follow your family's practice. Tomorrow, Monday 23 November, is Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, when Hari and Hara are worshipped together, and the second Karthika Somavaram; Karthika Pournami follows on Tuesday 24 November.
Pradosh puja vidhi
- Morning: bathe early (sunrise 06:25 AM in Hyderabad) and offer water to the Sun if you wish.
- Fast: keep a fast or a light diet through the day, according to your health.
- Evening: bathe or wash again before sunset (05:40 PM in Hyderabad) and set up a Shiva lingam or picture with Nandi.
- Abhishekam: offer water, milk or panchamritam, bilva leaves and white flowers, chanting the mantra below.
- Lamp and aarti: light a ghee lamp, do aarti, and if possible visit a Shiva temple for the Pradosham abhishekam.
- Break the fast: after the evening puja, with simple sattvic food.
No materials? At twilight, sit quietly, picture Shiva and Nandi, and chant the mantra with attention. The twilight prayer is the essence; bilva, milk and the temple visit are customs that enrich it.
Mantra for the day
oṃ namaḥ śivāya (Om Namah Shivaya). Meaning: "Salutations to Shiva," the auspicious one. The Panchakshari is the simplest and most universal Shiva mantra. Chant it 108 times at twilight, as an offering of surrender rather than a request for guaranteed results.
Vrat guidance
Some devotees keep a full fast until the Pradosh puja, others take fruit and milk, and others eat one meal. Children, elderly people, pregnant or nursing women and anyone with diabetes or another medical condition should not feel obliged to fast; consult a doctor. The evening prayer alone is a complete observance.
What you can do today
- Offer water to the rising Sun, then plan your Pradosh evening.
- Visit a Shiva temple at twilight for the Pradosham abhishekam to Nandi and Shiva.
- Chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times after sunset.
- Offer a bilva leaf or a white flower; if you have neither, a lamp is enough.
- Prepare for tomorrow's Vaikuntha Chaturdashi and Karthika Somavaram.
- Light the Karthika deepam and keep the night calm and sattvic.
With family and children
Children love the story of Shiva drinking the poison to save the world and his throat turning blue, which is why he is called Neelakantha. Ask them what it means to take on a hard task for others' sake. Let them place a flower before Nandi and whisper a wish in his ear, a sweet temple custom.
