Religious significance
Ksheerabdi Dwadasi: Lakshmi-Narayana at the tulasi
Ksheerabdi means the ocean of milk. As traditionally told in Telugu homes, on this Dwadashi Vishnu, newly awake, comes with Lakshmi to the tulasi plant, and the day also recalls the churning of the milk ocean, which is why some families call it Chiluku Dwadasi. Women decorate the tulasi kota with rangoli and turmeric, place a small amla branch beside the tulasi to represent Vishnu, offer Lakshmi-Narayana puja, and in the evening light many lamps, often with Karthika-style wicks, around the plant. It is one of the most cherished evenings of the Telugu Karthika Masam.
Tulasi Vivah
Across North and West India, Tulasi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the tulasi plant (as Vrinda or Tulasi Devi) to Vishnu in the form of Shaligram or Krishna. Families decorate the plant like a bride, set up a small mandap of sugarcane, and perform the kanyadaan and pheras with songs. The date varies by community from Ekadashi to Purnima; Drik lists it today.
Ekadashi parana, Vaishnava and Guruvayur Ekadashi
Smarta devotees who fasted on Friday break their fast today during Dwadashi, ideally after the morning puja. Because Dashami prevailed at Friday's dawn, Vaishnava traditions fast today instead, and Kerala's Guruvayur Ekadashi is also today, the greatest festival day of the Guruvayurappan temple. In Maharashtra, see Kartiki Ekadashi at Pandharpur.
Chaturmasa ends, Tamasa Manvadi
With Vishnu awake, Chaturmasa closes and the season of weddings and samskaras resumes in communities that observe the pause. Drik also lists Tamasa Manvadi, one of the Manvadi days that traditionally mark the beginning of a Manvantara, when some families offer tarpana to ancestors.
Ksheerabdi Dwadasi puja vidhi
- Morning: bathe early (sunrise 06:24 AM in Hyderabad). If you fasted yesterday, do a short Vishnu puja and break the fast with prasadam during Dwadashi.
- Prepare the tulasi kota: clean it, draw rangoli, apply turmeric and kumkum, and tie a small amla branch beside the tulasi.
- Lakshmi-Narayana puja: offer flowers, akshata, fruit and a ghee lamp; recite the mantra below or the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Evening lamps: after sunset (05:40 PM in Hyderabad) light as many lamps as you can around the tulasi.
- Naivedyam: sweet pongal, payasam, fruits or jaggery, then share the prasadam.
No materials? One lamp beside a tulasi pot, or even beside a picture of tulasi, with a sincere prayer is a complete offering. The amla branch, many lamps and elaborate decorations are beautiful customs, not requirements.
Mantra for the day
oṃ śrī tulasyai namaḥ (Om Shri Tulasyai Namah). Meaning: "Salutations to the revered Tulasi." It is the familiar name-mantra used when offering water and a lamp to the tulasi plant. Chant it 11 or 108 times while circling the plant, as an act of reverence, without expecting particular results.
Vrat guidance
If you are breaking Friday's fast, begin gently with fruit, milk or a light meal. If you follow the Vaishnava calendar and fast today, follow your temple's parana time tomorrow. Children, elderly people, pregnant or nursing women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast; consult a doctor.
What you can do today
- Break Friday's fast at the correct parana time from your local panchang, or keep today's Vaishnava fast.
- Decorate the tulasi kota with rangoli, turmeric and an amla branch.
- Light lamps around the tulasi after sunset and invite neighbours to join.
- Watch or attend a Tulasi Vivah or the Guruvayur Ekadashi celebrations online.
- Gift a tulasi sapling to a friend or neighbour.
- Offer a Saturday lamp to Venkateswara along with the Karthika deepam.
With family and children
Ksheerabdi Dwadasi is wonderful for children: let them draw the rangoli, place lamps (with adult supervision) and help decorate the tulasi. Tell them the story of the gods and asuras churning the ocean of milk and Lakshmi rising from it, and why the family worships the humble tulasi plant.

Frequently asked questions
Is Ksheerabdi Dwadasi on 21 November 2026?
Yes. In India, Ksheerabdi Dwadasi and Tulasi Vivah fall on Saturday 21 November 2026. Ekadashi ends at 06:31 AM IST in Hyderabad and Dwadashi prevails for the rest of the day, so the evening tulasi puja is on Dwadashi.
Should I fast or break my fast today?
If you fasted on Friday's (Smarta) Devutthana Ekadashi, today is parana, the fast-breaking day. If you follow the Vaishnava calendar, as ISKCON and many Vaishnava temples do, today is your Ekadashi. Check a local panchang or your temple for the exact parana time; we do not list it.
What is Guruvayur Ekadashi?
It is the Shukla Ekadashi of the Malayalam month Vrischikam, the most important festival day at the Sri Krishna temple in Guruvayur, Kerala. Drik Panchang lists it on Saturday 21 November 2026.
What is Chaturmasa Last Day?
Chaturmasa, the four sacred months that began with Devshayani Ekadashi, ends with Vishnu's awakening. For Hyderabad, Drik lists the last day on 21 November; the New Delhi listing places it on 20 November.
Can Tulasi Vivah be done in an apartment?
Yes. A potted tulasi on a balcony or windowsill is enough. Decorate it, place a small Krishna, Vishnu or shaligram beside it, light a lamp and sing or recite a short prayer.
A closing thought
The Lord has woken, and the first place he is welcomed is the humble tulasi in the courtyard. Light your lamps around it tonight and let the home feel, for one evening, like the shore of the ocean of milk.
