Religious significance
Vishnu awakens
Chaturmasa began with Devshayani Ekadashi in Ashadha, when Vishnu is traditionally believed to enter yoga nidra on the serpent Adishesha in the ocean of milk. On Kartika Shukla Ekadashi he awakens, which is why the day is called Devutthana (the god rises) or Prabodhini (the awakening). Puranic Ekadashi narratives, especially those collected in the Padma Purana's Ekadashi mahatmya, extol this Ekadashi. In Maharashtra this Ekadashi is Kartiki Ekadashi, when Varkari pilgrims gather at Pandharpur for Lord Vitthala.
In many North Indian homes, women draw the Lord's feet in rice paste, place sugarcane, seasonal fruit and water chestnuts under a basket, and wake the Lord with songs and the sound of bells. The awakening also ends the Chaturmasa pause on weddings and other samskaras in communities that keep it.
Bhishma Panchak begins
The five days from today to Kartika Purnima form Bhishma Panchak, remembered as the days Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, taught dharma to Yudhishthira, with Krishna present. Devotees offer lamps and keep a simple diet for the five days; in Odisha it overlaps with Habisha and Panchuka.
Kansa Vadh
Drik lists Kansa Vadh on Kartika Shukla Dashami, the tithi at sunrise today. In Mathura it is marked with a fair and the symbolic striking of an effigy of Kansa, recalling Krishna's victory over the tyrant king.
Simple Ekadashi puja vidhi
- Morning: bathe early (sunrise 06:24 AM in Hyderabad) and take the sankalpa for the fast you can keep.
- Vishnu puja: offer water, tulasi leaves, yellow flowers and a ghee lamp to Vishnu, Venkateswara or Krishna. Tulasi is offered to Vishnu but traditionally not picked on Ekadashi, so pluck the leaves the day before.
- Awakening: in the evening, ring a bell, sing a bhajan or recite the Vishnu Sahasranama to wake the Lord.
- Naivedyam: fruits, milk sweets and sugarcane, avoiding grains.
- Night: many keep a jagaran with kirtan; light the Karthika deepam after sunset (05:40 PM in Hyderabad).
No materials? Chant the mantra below with full attention and stay away from grains for the day if your health allows. The fast and the remembrance are the essence; the sugarcane, rangoli feet and jagaran are customs.
Mantra for the day
oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya (Om Namo Narayanaya). Meaning: "Salutations to Narayana," the Lord who rests on the waters. This eight-syllable Ashtakshari is among the best-known Vaishnava mantras. Chant it 108 times, offering the day to Vishnu without bargaining for results.
Vrat guidance
The Ekadashi fast ranges from nirjala (no water), to fruit and milk, to simply avoiding grains and beans. Parana, breaking the fast, is done on Saturday during Dwadashi; check a local panchang for the exact window. Children, elderly people, pregnant or nursing women and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure or other medical conditions should not feel obliged to fast; consult a doctor. A partial fast with prayer is fully valid.
What you can do today
- Keep the Ekadashi fast you can sustain, and drink water unless you keep nirjala.
- Recite or listen to the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Wake the Lord in the evening with a bell, a bhajan and a lamp.
- Begin the Bhishma Panchak lamp, if you will keep it for five days.
- Prepare the tulasi kota for tomorrow's Ksheerabdi Dwadasi and Tulasi Vivah.
- Give fruit or food to someone in need.
With family and children
Tell children the story of Vishnu sleeping on Adishesha and waking today, and let them ring the bell for the awakening. Explain that some family members are fasting and the children can help by serving fruit. Children should eat normally.
