Mahashana (महाशना, IAST: Mahāśanā) is a Sanskrit-origin Hindu girl-name meaning “She whose appetite is vast and all-consuming”. From mahā (great) and aśana (eating, food, or hunger), this epithet reveals the Goddess as the one whose hunger encompasses all of existence, symbolic of her power to receive and transform the entire cosmos.

Meaning, etymology & significance

The Sanskrit word aśana derives from the root aś, meaning to eat or to pervade, giving Mahāśanā the dual sense of one who consumes greatly and one who pervades all things through that consumption. In Śākta cosmology, the Goddess's great appetite is a metaphor for her all-encompassing consciousness that leaves nothing outside herself. This name in the Lalitā Sahasranāma complements her epithets of cosmic dissolution and sovereign completeness.

This epithet of Lalitā is uncommon as a modern given name and is better appreciated in its liturgical context. Pronounced mah-haa-SHAH-naa, care should be taken with the aspirated śa sound.
