BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is a Hindu temple of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha at 1150 Brand Lane, Stafford, Texas, in the Houston area (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha). It is built of Turkish limestone and Italian marble that were hand-carved in India and then assembled in Texas (Hinduism Today; Houston Press). Its central shrines hold Swaminarayan with Gunatitanand Swami, flanked by Ghanshyam Maharaj and Harikrishna Maharaj, with Radha-Krishna and further shrines near the entrance (Hinduism Today).

Worship at the temple began on 25 July 2004, when the murti pratishtha ceremony was performed during a four-day festival (Hinduism Today; BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha). Local reports place it in Stafford, next to Sugar Land, southwest of central Houston (Houston Press; ABC13).

Faith & Tradition

✦

Religious Significance of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Houston (Stafford)

The temple belongs to the Swaminarayan tradition, in which devotees worship Swaminarayan together with Gunatitanand Swami as Akshar-Purushottam. Alongside the main sanctum the temple also installs Radha-Krishna, Sita-Rama with Hanuman, and Shiva-Parvati with Ganesha, so families from different Hindu traditions can offer prayer under one roof (Hinduism Today; BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha).

BAPS describes the building as the first traditional Hindu mandir of stone and marble built in the United States, and the Houston Press column made a similar claim in 2008 (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha; Houston Press). Such 'first' claims are made by the temple and by commentators, and are not the result of a formal survey.

Heritage

✦

History of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Houston (Stafford)

The temple site is in Stafford, Fort Bend County, and uses a Stafford mailing address (Wikipedia, as a lead; BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha). According to the temple's own account, the stone was carved by artisans in India, and more than 33,000 pieces were shipped to Houston, where they were fitted together (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha; ABC13). Hinduism Today reported that around 1,500 artisans in North India carved the stone and that assembly in Texas took about 17 months, while the temple itself gives 16 months; published figures for the build time differ.

Pramukh Swami Maharaj performed the pran pratishtha on 25 July 2004, after which the mandir opened to devotees (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha). Hinduism Today counted about 7,000 people at the inauguration ceremony.

Architecture and sacred features

The mandir follows the traditional Indian stone-temple idiom, with pinnacles (shikharas), domes, pillars and carved arches. The temple states that Turkish limestone is used outside and Italian marble inside, and that no iron or steel was used in the structure (BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha; Houston Press). Hinduism Today gave the main structure as roughly 95 by 125 feet and 73 feet tall; other published figures differ, so treat dimensions as approximate.
