Quick answer: Monday 12 October 2026 is Chandra Darshana, the first sighting of the Moon after Amavasya, and Navratri Day 2, dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini. In Hyderabad, Shukla Dwitiya lasts until 10:13 PM IST and Swati nakshatra until 11:52 PM. Sunset is at 05:57 PM and moonset at 06:52 PM, so the crescent is visible only briefly after dusk.
There is something tender about the first sliver of the Moon. For two nights the sky was dark; tonight a thin silver line appears just above the western horizon and is gone within the hour. Today brings together three things that belong together: Monday, the Moon's own day; the crescent that Shiva wears in his hair; and Brahmacharini, the goddess whose patient tapas was devoted to Shiva.

Navratri Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini
Brahmacharini is Parvati in her years of austerity, holding a japa mala and a kamandalu, walking barefoot in white. She represents tapas: the discipline of keeping a promise over a long time. On the second day of Navratri, many devotees offer sugar or panchamrit as bhog, and white is the colour on many lists. For the dhyana shloka, stuti and full worship steps, see our Navratri 2026 Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini guide.
Religious significance
Chandra Darshana is the custom of sighting the Moon on the evening after Amavasya, usually on Shukla Dwitiya, and offering arghya (water) to Chandra. The Moon is linked in tradition with the mind and its moods, and the waxing crescent is treated as a sign of growth. The practice is a long-standing custom found across many regions rather than a single scriptural rule, and families observe it in different ways.
Monday and Shiva: Somavara is traditionally Shiva's day, and the crescent on his head (which gives him the name Chandrashekhara) makes this Chandra Darshana especially meaningful for Shiva devotees. Muddapappu Bathukamma: in Telangana, the third day of Bathukamma is named after the soft cooked dal offered as naivedyam. Tirumala: the Srivari Navaratri Brahmotsavam at Tirumala runs from 12 to 20 October; see the day-by-day vahana schedule.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- Morning: refresh the Navratri kalash water if your family does so, light the lamp, and pray to Maa Brahmacharini with her naam mantra. Offer sugar, panchamrit or fruit.
- If you keep Monday worship, pour water or milk over a Shiva lingam or before a picture of Shiva, offering a bilva leaf if available.
- Evening: after sunset, face west and look for the crescent. When you see it, offer a little water from a small vessel towards the Moon, or simply join your palms.
- Close with a short prayer for a calm, clear mind in the days ahead.
No materials? A glass of water and folded hands are enough. If clouds hide the Moon, offer the water facing west anyway; the intention is what counts.
Mantra for the day
Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah (oṃ devī brahmacāriṇyai namaḥ): "Salutations to Goddess Brahmacharini." Chant it 11 or 108 times during the morning lamp, as a prayer for patience and steadiness, not for any particular result.
Fasting today
Navratri vrat-keepers continue their fruit or vrat-food diet; some Monday fasters eat once in the evening after Chandra Darshana. These are optional customs. Elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should consult a doctor and need not fast.
What you can do today
- Note your city's sunset and moonset times and plan to step outside right after dusk.
- Offer arghya to the crescent Moon, or simply look at it in silence for a minute.
- Pray to Maa Brahmacharini and offer sugar or panchamrit as bhog.
- Offer water or milk to Shiva for the Monday.
- Choose one small discipline (a daily mantra, less screen time, an early walk) to keep for the rest of Navratri, in the spirit of Brahmacharini's tapas.
- In Telangana, prepare muddapappu for the evening Bathukamma.
With family and children
Take the children to a terrace or open space at dusk and make a game of spotting the Moon first. Explain that the Moon will grow a little every night until the full Moon of Sharad Purnima. Tell them how Parvati, as Brahmacharini, kept trying for years without giving up. Our Navratri stories for kids include her story in read-aloud form.

Frequently asked questions
When can I see the Moon on Chandra Darshana, 12 October 2026?
In Hyderabad the Sun sets at 05:57 PM and the Moon sets at 06:52 PM, so the thin crescent is low in the western sky for a short time after sunset. Look soon after dusk with a clear western horizon. Your city's times will differ slightly.
Which goddess is worshipped on Navratri Day 2 in 2026?
Maa Brahmacharini, worshipped on Monday 12 October 2026. She is the form of Parvati who performed long austerities to win Shiva, shown holding a rosary and a water pot.
Why is Monday special for Shiva?
Monday (Somavara) is named after Soma, the Moon, which Shiva wears on his head. Traditionally Mondays are kept for Shiva worship. Today the day of the Moon coincides with the first sighting of the new crescent and with the goddess whose tapas was for Shiva.
Is there a fast on Chandra Darshana?
Some people fast during the day and break it after seeing the Moon and offering water. It is a custom, not an obligation. Anyone elderly, pregnant or with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor.
A reflection for the second day
The new Moon is thin and easy to miss, yet it grows every night. Brahmacharini's tapas was like that too: small efforts, repeated faithfully. Whatever you begin this Navratri, let it be modest enough to keep.
