Quick answer: Friday 13 November 2026 is Nagula Chavithi in India. The tithi is Kartika Shukla Chaturthi until 08:42 PM and the nakshatra is Mula until 05:17 PM (Hyderabad, IST). Telugu and Kannada families worship the Naga devatas at temples or anthills, offering milk, chalimidi and chimmili and praying for the wellbeing of the family. Drik Panchang also lists Labh Chaturthi today, and Shukla Chaturthi is traditionally a day for Lord Ganesha.

This page gives the day's panchang and a short guide. For the full story, rituals and regional customs, read our main Nagula Chavithi 2026 guide.

Religious significance

Nagula Chavithi: honouring the serpent devatas

Nagas hold an honoured place across Hindu tradition. Vishnu rests on Adishesha, Shiva wears Vasuki around his neck, and the Mahabharata tells the story of the serpent lineages. In village and household practice, nagas are also guardians of land, water and fertility, which is why snake mounds (puttas) near fields and temples became places of worship. Nagula Chavithi, on the Chaturthi of Karthika's bright fortnight, is the Telugu and Kannada festival devoted to them. Much of the observance is regional custom handed down through families rather than a single scriptural rule, so practices vary from district to district.

Typical customs include a morning fast, a visit to the anthill or a temple naga stone (often at a Subrahmanya or Shiva temple), offering milk, turmeric, kumkum and flowers, and offering chalimidi (rice flour with jaggery) and chimmili (sesame and jaggery). Families pray for children's health and protection from harm. Some households avoid digging the soil or cutting with sharp tools on this day, out of respect for creatures that live underground.

Ganesha and Shukla Chaturthi

Every Shukla Chaturthi is traditionally associated with Lord Ganesha, and many devotees begin any puja, including today's naga puja, with a prayer to Vighneshwara. A short Ganesha invocation is a natural way to start the day.

Labh Chaturthi

Drik Panchang lists Labh Chaturthi on 13 November, on the eve of Labh Panchami, which is significant mainly in Gujarati business tradition. Telugu households usually do not mark it separately.

Chhath begins in the north

In Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, today is Nahay Khay, the first day of the four-day Chhath Puja 2026, with Kharna tomorrow, Sandhya Arghya on Sunday 15 November and Usha Arghya on Monday 16 November.

Puja vidhi for Nagula Chavithi

  • Bath and resolve: bathe early (sunrise is 06:20 AM in Hyderabad), wear clean clothes and take a small sankalpa for the family's wellbeing.
  • Ganesha first: light a lamp and offer a flower to Ganesha with the mantra below.
  • Naga puja: at a temple naga stone, an anthill or a home altar with a naga picture or silver naga idol, offer water, a little milk, turmeric, kumkum, flowers and akshata.
  • Naivedyam: chalimidi, chimmili, a banana or soaked chana. Some families tie a thread or apply a turmeric mark at the mound.
  • Prayer: pray for the health of children and elders and ask forgiveness for any harm done to living creatures, knowingly or unknowingly.
  • Evening: light the Karthika deepam after sunset (05:41 PM in Hyderabad).

No materials? Draw a simple serpent with turmeric or rice flour on a plate, place a lamp beside it and pray. Essentials are the bath, the prayer and respect for living beings; the specific offerings are customs that vary by family.

Mantra for the day

oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ (Om Gam Ganapataye Namah). Meaning: "Salutations to Ganapati," with gam as Ganesha's seed syllable. Chant it 11 or 21 times before the naga puja, as a devotional opening rather than a guarantee of any outcome.

Vrat guidance

Many women keep a fast until the naga puja is complete, then eat the prasadam. A lighter option is fruit and milk, or one simple meal. Fasting is never compulsory. Elderly devotees, pregnant women, people with diabetes or any medical condition, and children should not feel obliged to fast; consult a doctor before any strict fast.

What you can do today

  • Start the day with the Ganesha mantra and a lamp.
  • Visit a temple naga stone or a clean, safe anthill site; avoid disturbing wild habitats.
  • Offer chalimidi or chimmili and share it with neighbours.
  • Skip the milk for live snakes and, if you wish, support a local wildlife rescue instead.
  • Avoid digging or uprooting plants today if that is your family custom.
  • Light the Karthika deepam at dusk and remember elders who taught you the festival.

With family and children

Children enjoy hearing that Vishnu sleeps on the great serpent Adishesha and that Shiva wears a snake as an ornament. Use the day to teach respect for animals: snakes are part of nature, not villains, and they should never be handled or troubled. Let children shape chimmili balls, draw a turmeric naga on the plate, and offer the first flower.

Because Nagula Chavithi is fixed by the tithi at midday, the USA and Canada observed it on Thursday 12 November, while the UK, the UAE and Australia keep 13 November. Our guide to celebrating Nagula Chavithi abroad has apartment-friendly ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nagula Chavithi on 13 November 2026?

Yes, in India. Drik Panchang lists Nagula Chavithi on Friday 13 November 2026. Kartika Shukla Chaturthi lasts until 08:42 PM IST, so it covers the morning and midday when the puja is traditionally done.

Why is Nagula Chavithi on 12 November in the USA?

Festival days are fixed by the tithi at the local time that matters (for Nagula Chavithi, midday). In the USA and Canada, Chaturthi already prevails at midday on Thursday 12 November, so their observance is a day earlier. The UK, UAE and Australia keep Friday 13 November.

Should I pour milk into a snake mound?

Pouring milk at a temple naga stone or a symbolic mound is the traditional custom. Please do not feed milk to live snakes: they cannot digest it, and captive snakes shown at festivals often suffer. A naga idol, a picture or a simple prayer is a complete offering.

What is Labh Chaturthi?

Drik Panchang lists Labh Chaturthi on this date, the day before Labh Panchami (Saturday 14 November), which many Gujarati traders treat as the first working day of the new year. It is not a Telugu observance; for Telugu families today is Nagula Chavithi.

Can I eat on Nagula Chavithi?

Many women fast until the naga puja is done and then eat prasadam such as chalimidi and chimmili. Others take only fruit and milk. The fast is a devotional choice; elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged and should consult a doctor.

A closing thought

Nagula Chavithi asks for something simple and timeless: reverence for the life we share the earth with. Offer your milk and sweets, pray for your children, and carry that gentleness into the rest of Karthika.
