Quick answer: Nagula Chavithi 2026 Canada is on Thursday 12 November 2026, a day before India, where families keep it on Friday 13 November. This is the Drik Panchang date for Canada, and it is the same in every city we checked, from Halifax to Vancouver.

It falls the day after Remembrance Day, in the first week of Karthika Masam, when most of the country is cold and dark by late afternoon. This guide shows how Telugu and Kannada families in Canada can keep the day warmly indoors. All times are local Canadian time.

Nagula Chavithi 2026 Canada vs India: the date difference

WhereNagula Chavithi 2026Karthika Masam begins
CanadaThu 12 NovMon 9 Nov
USAThu 12 NovMon 9 Nov
IndiaFri 13 NovTue 10 Nov

Why the gap? Hindu festival days are fixed by the tithi (lunar day) prevailing at local sunrise. Canada is far behind India in clock time, so the Chaturthi tithi is already running when the sun rises over Canada on Thursday. In India it is counted from Friday. Both dates are correct for their places. If you live in Canada, follow Thursday.

The meaning of the day

Nagula Chavithi honours the Naga devatas on the Chaturthi of Karthika's bright fortnight. In Telugu villages, women rise early, fast and walk to a snake anthill (putta) with milk, turmeric, flowers and sweets. They pray for the long life and health of their children and for protection from snakebite. Some families also remember Subrahmanya, who is worshipped in serpent form in many South Indian shrines.

In Karnataka, Naga worship is strongest at Naga Panchami in Shravana, so some Kannada families in Canada will already have done their Naga puja in summer. Families with Telugu roots, or from areas near the Andhra and Telangana border, often keep Karthika's Nagula Chavithi as well.

Why the anthill custom does not suit Canada

  • The snakes are asleep: by mid-November most Canadian snakes are hibernating in underground dens. Disturbing a den in the cold can kill them.
  • Protected species: some Canadian snakes are species at risk, including the eastern massasauga rattlesnake in Ontario. Leave all wild snakes and their dens alone.
  • Frozen ground and parks: in many provinces the ground may be frozen or snow-covered, and leaving milk or food in parks is not allowed and attracts other animals.
  • Snakes don't need milk: it is not their natural food and can make them ill.

An indoor naga puja for a Canadian home

  • The idol: use a small silver, brass or copper naga, which many Indian grocery and puja stores in the GTA, Calgary and Vancouver areas carry, or draw a naga in rice flour and turmeric on a plate.
  • Abhishekam: set the idol in a plate, pour milk and then water over it, and apply turmeric and kumkum.
  • Offerings: flowers, chalimidi (rice flour and jaggery), chimmili (sesame and jaggery), fruits and soaked chana.
  • Prayer: chant "Om Nagadevatayai Namah" and pray for the health of every child in the family.
  • After the puja: take the milk as prasadam if it stayed clean, or pour small amounts onto an indoor plant. Do not put it outside.

Some South Indian temples in Canada have a naga image or Subrahmanya shrine. Ask your temple whether it plans a Nagula Chavithi abhishekam, and check its website for timings.

Sunset across Canada

Drik Panchang sunset times for Monday 9 November 2026 are below. On Thursday 12 November sunset will be a few minutes earlier still.

In Montreal and Ottawa the sun sets before 4:45 PM, often while people are still at work. If you keep a fast until evening, you can break it soon after you get home.

Fasting in the cold

The traditional fast avoids grains until after the puja, with milk, fruit and the naivedyam taken afterwards. In a Canadian November your body needs warmth and energy, especially if you commute by transit or clear snow. A fruit-and-milk fast or a single light meal is a sensible choice. Elders, diabetics, people with heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant or nursing women, children and anyone on regular medicine should consult a doctor first.

How to explain it to kids

Canadian children learn about hibernation in school, which is a lovely way in. Tell them: the snakes are sleeping underground now, so we don't wake them. Instead we pray to the Naga devata at home and thank the serpents for the part they play in nature. Then let them help shape a naga from rice flour and share the chimmili.

Practical tips for Canadian families

  • Thursday is a working and school day, and the day before was Remembrance Day. Plan a short morning puja and a family prasadam in the evening.
  • Many apartment and condo buildings have strict fire rules. Keep the lamp small, never leave it unattended, or use an LED diya.
  • Shop for sesame, jaggery and rice flour over the Diwali weekend (Diwali is Sunday 8 November in Canada).
  • Your Thursday evening call home reaches India on Friday, when your family there is keeping the festival.
