Religious significance
Labh Panchami: blessed beginnings
In Gujarat, the days between Diwali and Labh Panchami are a holiday for many businesses. On Labh Panchami, traders perform a puja of their new account books (chopda), often writing the auspicious swastika and "Shubh" and "Labh" on the first page, and reopen for the year. Shubh and Labh are, in popular devotion, the sons of Lord Ganesha, which is why Ganesha and Lakshmi are worshipped together on this day. It is a regional and community custom rather than a pan-Indian scriptural festival, and it carries a simple moral message: begin with prayer, and earn with integrity.
Jains observe Kartika Shukla Panchami as Gyan Panchami, a day to honour sacred knowledge and the scriptures, often by cleaning and worshipping books.
A Karthika Saturday for Venkateswara
In the Telugu states, Saturdays (Shanivaram) are closely linked with Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala, and the Saturdays of the Tamil month Purattasi are especially famous for it. In Karthika, devotees combine this with the month's lamp and snanam. Many families also light a sesame-oil lamp for Shani Deva on Saturdays. Shani is understood in tradition as the planet of discipline and karma; honouring him is an act of humility, not something to approach with fear.
Kharna and the eve of Skanda Sashti
In Bihar and Jharkhand, today is Kharna, the second day of Chhath Puja 2026, when vratis break the day's fast in the evening with kheer and roti and then begin a long nirjala fast. In Tamil households, the sixth day of the Kanda Sashti vratam is tomorrow: Skanda Sashti and Soora Samharam on Sunday 15 November.
Simple puja vidhi for today
- Morning: bathe before or soon after sunrise (06:20 AM in Hyderabad) and clean the altar.
- Ganesha and Lakshmi: if you are starting new work, a new notebook or a new business ledger, place it before Ganesha and Lakshmi, apply a dot of kumkum and offer a flower. Write "Shubh" and "Labh" or simply "Sri" on the first page if that is your custom.
- Venkateswara: offer tulasi, a flower and a ghee lamp before a picture of Srinivasa. Many families apply a namam of turmeric or kumkum.
- Japa: chant the mantra below 11 or 108 times.
- Naivedyam: sweet pongal, curd rice, a banana or jaggery.
- Evening: light the Karthika deepam after sunset (05:41 PM in Hyderabad), and a small sesame-oil lamp for Shani if your family does so.
No materials? A mental prayer to Venkateswara and a sincere resolution to work honestly are complete in themselves. The ledger puja, the colours and the specific naivedyam are optional customs.
Mantra for the day
oṃ namo veṅkaṭeśāya (Om Namo Venkateshaya). Meaning: "Salutations to Venkatesha," the Lord of the Venkata hills. It is a short, widely used name-mantra suitable for every devotee. Chant it as remembrance of the Lord's grace, without expecting any particular material reward.
What you can do today
- Begin one new task you have been postponing, with a short prayer to Ganesha first.
- If you run a business, review your accounts and settle one pending payment you owe.
- Offer a sesame-oil lamp at a Venkateswara or Navagraha shrine, or at home.
- Help someone who works with their hands: a tip, a meal or simply thanks.
- Clean and arrange your books or sacred texts, in the spirit of Gyan Panchami.
- Prepare for tomorrow's Skanda Sashti or Chhath if your family observes them.
With family and children
Labh Panchami is a lovely day to talk to children about honest work. Give them a new notebook, let them write "Sri" or draw a small swastika on the first page, and ask them what they would like to learn this year. Tell them the story that Ganesha's sons are called Shubh (auspicious) and Labh (benefit), and that real benefit comes from good work done well.
