Margasira Pournami 2025: Significance, Pooja Vidhanam, Rituals and Vrat Benefits

Margasira Pournami (also known as Margashirsha Purnima or Margali Full Moon) is one of the most sacred full-moon days in the Hindu calendar. Falling in the auspicious month of Margasira (November–December), this Purnima holds special spiritual importance, especially in South India and among devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. In 2025, Margasira Pournami will be observed on Thursday, 11 December 2025.

Spiritual Importance of Margasira Pournami

The month of Margasira is described in the Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 10, Verse 35) by Lord Krishna himself:

“māsānāṁ mārgaśhīrṣho ’ham” “Among months, I am Margasira.”

This divine statement makes the entire month highly auspicious, and the full moon day (Pournami) becomes the pinnacle of spiritual energy.

Key Significance:

  • Most preferred day for Satyanarayan Vratham in many traditions
  • Ideal day for performing ancestral rites (Shraddha/Tarpanam)
  • Powerful day for Chandra (Moon) remedies and mental peace
  • Special significance for Lord Dattatreya – his birth anniversary (Datta Jayanti) usually falls on Margasira Purnima
  • In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as “Thiruvathirai” or Arudra Darshanam in Shiva temples (especially Chidambaram Nataraja Temple)
