The Shiva-Vishnu Temple, also called the Livermore Temple or Livermore Hindu Temple, is a Hindu temple at 1234 Arrowhead Avenue in Livermore, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area's Tri-Valley. It is run by the Hindu Community and Cultural Center (HCCC), and it has separate shrines for Shiva and Vishnu (India Currents; The Independent). Because both are honoured, the temple is listed here under Shiva as its first deity, with Vishnu equally central.

The temple's own site lists a wider set of deities in the main temple, including Ganesha, Parvati, Kartikeya, Lakshmi, Radha-Krishna, Rama-Sita, Hanuman and Durga, and describes HCCC as serving devotees across Hindu traditions (HCCC). KQED described it as a major gathering place for the Bay Area's Indian American community.

Religious Significance of Shiva-Vishnu Temple of Livermore

The Independent describes the temple as one of the few in the United States combining Shiva and Vishnu worship in a dual-sanctum design, and as the centre of Livermore's Hindu community. HCCC's own text says the organization was formed so Hindus could pray, study religion and hold cultural programmes, and it lists human services, youth and education, and cultural events alongside worship (HCCC).

KQED's 2013 visit found a pan-Indian congregation with priests from different parts of India, and noted that worship there often begins with Ganesha. The Consulate General of India in San Francisco called the temple 'a boon to the Indian community in Bay Area' in a note on its 2022 consecration ceremony.

History of Shiva-Vishnu Temple of Livermore

According to the temple's website, the Hindu Community and Cultural Center was incorporated in 1977 as a non-profit, to give Hindus a place to pray, study religion and hold cultural programmes (HCCC). The Independent adds that the Livermore temple itself opened in July 1986, and India Currents likewise says it first opened in 1986. The 1977 date therefore refers to the organization and 1986 to the temple building.

The temple holds a Maha Kumbhabhishekam, a consecration ceremony the Consulate General of India and India Currents describe as occurring once in twelve years. The third was held on 6 to 10 July 2022. India Currents reported that over 250 volunteers, 32 priests, three shilpis (sculptors), two musicians and one sthapathi (temple architect) took part, that planning began in earnest in January 2021, and that an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 devotees attended.

The same report says the 2022 work gave the vimanas and rajagopurams (shrine tops and entrance towers), previously brass, a gold-plated finish, gold-plated the two flagpoles, set new black granite bases brought from India, renewed shrine flooring and lighting, and installed eleven new deities, including Rama and Chandikeswara, and new principal images of Varaha and Narasimha for the Vishnu shrine. A new yoni base was placed for the Shiva shrine (India Currents). The consulate said thousands of devotees attended.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple is built in a South Indian style, with a tall tiered entrance gopuram, red-brick hall walls and separate shrine towers, as seen in the photograph from Wikimedia Commons. KQED described white, intricately carved spires rising from the main hall. India Currents notes that each main shrine has its own flagpole (dhwaja stambham) and that much of the brick structure needed restoration over the decades.
