Heritage

History of Sri Siva Vishnu Temple

According to the temple's history, friends in the Washington area first discussed a Hindu temple in the capital in 1976, and the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple Trust was formed under a deed dated 31 January 1980. In 1984 the trust bought land with a small house, the Balalaya, where the first shrines were installed. Construction of the present building began in 1988 under architect Dr. Ganapati Sthapati; the first shrines in the building were consecrated in 1990 and a first Kumbhabhishekam followed in 1991 (Sri Siva Vishnu Temple).

The temple's history gives 2002 for a Mahakumbhabhishekam that added the rajagopuram and Vasantha Mandapam, with Venkateshwara and Ayyappa shrine gopurams completed in July 2003 (Sri Siva Vishnu Temple). Hinduism Today reported that a dedication (Kumbhabhishekam) was held on 7 July 2003, after about twenty-five years of planning and fundraising, with chairman V. S. Raghavan calling it a once-in-a-lifetime event for most Hindus (Hinduism Today). Sources therefore place the main consecration in 2002 or 2003; this page reports both.

The temple's website says a restoration project is being prepared for a Jeernodharna Kumbhabhishekam in 2027, including replacement of the prakaram roof (as listed by the temple, checked October 2026).

Architecture and sacred features

The temple's website says its design draws on several South Asian and other traditions, naming Mayan, Pallava, Vijayanagara, Kerala and South Canara styles. The complex includes the rajagopuram, an auditorium, a dining hall and two homa fire-altars (Sri Siva Vishnu Temple).
