Diwali Fireworks in Alberta 2026: Provincial Rules and City Bans in Calgary and Edmonton
Alberta has no province-wide Diwali fireworks rule: the province left fireworks to municipalities in 2020, and most large Alberta cities ban personal fireworks. Here is what applies in Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, Red Deer, Fort McMurray and Lethbridge.

Quick answer: Diwali fireworks in Alberta
- Alberta has no provincial Diwali fireworks rule. Inside municipalities, you must follow the municipal bylaw and check with the local fire department. Fireworks and exploding targets (Alberta.ca)
- In 2020 Alberta removed its own fire-code fireworks provisions to align with federal rules, giving municipalities more flexibility to regulate fireworks. Fire Code Bulletin 19-FCB-001R1: National Fire Code 2019 Alberta...
- In the Forest Protection Area, fireworks need written permission from a Forest Officer all year, and violators can be ticketed $600. Fireworks and exploding targets (Alberta.ca)

Why your city decides in Alberta
Alberta's fireworks page tells people in municipal districts to familiarize themselves with the applicable municipal bylaws and contact the local municipal fire department. Fireworks and exploding targets (Alberta.ca)
A 2020 fire code bulletin explains why: the province removed its own fireworks provisions from the Alberta edition of the National Fire Code to align with federal rules, and municipalities gained more flexibility to regulate fireworks. Handling and discharge must still conform to Natural Resources Canada's Display Fireworks Manual. Fire Code Bulletin 19-FCB-001R1: National Fire Code 2019 Alberta...
In practice, the large Alberta cities with big Indian communities have used that flexibility to ban personal fireworks. A family in Calgary or Edmonton should plan Diwali around diyas, lights and permitted public displays rather than a backyard show.
Rural Alberta and the Forest Protection Area
Outside cities, the Forest and Prairie Protection Act matters. Within the Forest Protection Area, the use of fireworks is prohibited without written permission from a Forest Officer, at any time of year, and violators can be ticketed $600. Fireworks and exploding targets (Alberta.ca)
Check the Alberta Fire Bans website or app on the day as well: a fire ban or advisory can be added at short notice.

What we could not verify
These points are still open. Do not treat them as settled until the official authority confirms them:
- The 2020 fire code bulletin may have been replaced by a newer Alberta fire code edition, which we did not read.
- Lethbridge's bylaw number and whether private use is allowed there.
Diwali fireworks safety tips for Alberta
- Read the label before dark. The product category and the safety distance printed on it are the legal and practical limits for your garden or yard.
- Keep diyas and candles away from curtains, rangoli powder piles, saris and dupattas, and never leave a lit diya unattended.
- Tell your neighbours in advance, especially older people and pet owners, and stop on time.
- Keep children well back and hand them nothing that is lit. Sparklers stay hot long after the spark ends.
- Check for a fire ban or dry-weather warning on the day. A ban can be announced at short notice and overrides the normal rules.
Lawful ways to celebrate Diwali without fireworks
- Clay diyas: a row of oil lamps at the door and windows is the heart of Deepavali and needs no permit. Stand each one on a metal plate or a tray of sand.
- LED diyas and string lights: battery diyas are safe for balconies, dormitories, rented flats and anywhere open flames are restricted.
- Rangoli: a coloured-powder, rice-flour or flower rangoli at the entrance welcomes Lakshmi and gives children a creative part in the festival.
- Temple and community celebrations: most Hindu temples and community associations hold Lakshmi Puja, aarti and cultural programmes during Diwali week; check their own website or notice board for the 2026 schedule.
- Authorised public displays: a professional display run under a permit or licence gives the family a fireworks moment without the legal risk.
- Lakshmi Puja at home: the evening puja, aarti, sweets shared with neighbours and a family meal are what most people remember about Diwali.
