Lakshmi Puja Muhurat: Evening (during Pradosh Kaal after sunset)
Best Time: When Sthir Lagna coincides with Amavasya Tithi
Duration: Approximately 2 hours 15 minutes
Consult your local Panchang for exact timing in your region.
ESSENTIAL PREPARATIONS BEFORE PUJA
Cleanse your home thoroughly and decorate with rangoli, flowers, and diyas.
Prepare the puja altar facing North or East direction.
Take a sacred bath (preferably before sunrise) and wear fresh clothes.
Gather puja items: Idol or picture of Lakshmi-Ganesha, flowers, incense, camphor, fruits, sweets, coins, and new account books.
Light diyas throughout the house before beginning the puja.
MAIN DIWALI PUJA RITUALS
1. GANESH PUJA (Begin with Ganesha Worship)
Mantra:
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः
Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha
Meaning: Salutations to Lord Ganesha, remover of obstacles.
Ganesh Shloka:
वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥
Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada.
Meaning: O Lord with curved trunk, large body, and brilliance of a million suns, remove all obstacles from my path.
2. LAKSHMI PUJA (Main Worship)
Basic Lakshmi Mantra:
ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः
Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namaha
Meaning: Salutations to Goddess Mahalakshmi.
Lakshmi Beej Mantra:
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं श्रीं क्रीं क्लीं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥
Om Hreem Shreem Kreem Shreem Kreem Kleem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namaha
Meaning: Beej mantra for invoking Goddess Lakshmi’s blessings.
Lakshmi Stuti:
या साक्षात् क्षीरसागरराजतनया श्रीरङ्गधामेश्वरी दासीभूतसमस्तदेववनिता लोकैकदीपाङ्कुरा।
श्रीमन्मन्दकटाक्षलब्धविभव ब्रह्मेन्द्रगङ्गाधरा त्वं त्रैलोक्य कुटुम्बिनीं सरसिजां वन्दे मुकुन्दप्रियाम्॥
Meaning: O daughter of the ocean of milk, residing in Vaikuntha, served by all goddesses, the light of the world, who bestows wealth through your gracious glance upon Brahma, Indra, and Shiva—I worship you, the lotus-seated mother of the three worlds and beloved of Lord Vishnu.
3. KUBER PUJA (God of Wealth)
Mantra:
ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥
Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye Dhanadhanya Samriddhim Me Dehi Dapaya Swaha
Meaning: Salutations to Lord Kubera, bestower of wealth and prosperity.
4. SARASWATI PUJA (For Knowledge and Wisdom)
Mantra:
ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः
Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha
Meaning: Salutations to Goddess Saraswati.
STEP-BY-STEP PUJA VIDHI
- Sankalp: Take water in your right palm and state your intention and purpose of the puja.
- Kalash Sthapana: Establish a water-filled kalash with mango leaves and coconut.
- Ganesh Pujan: Worship Lord Ganesha for obstacle removal.
- Lakshmi Avahan: Invoke Goddess Lakshmi with mantras and prayers.
- Pancha Upachara: Offer the five elements:
- Gandha (sandalwood paste)
- Pushpa (flowers)
- Dhupa (incense)
- Deepa (lamp)
- Naivedya (food offerings)
- Shodashopachara: Perform 16-step detailed worship if possible.
- Lakshmi Ashtak or Chalisa: Recite hymns dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi.
- Aarti: Perform aarti with camphor or ghee lamp.
- Prasad Distribution: Distribute blessed offerings to all family members.
- Pradakshina: Circle around the deity three times clockwise.
ESSENTIAL DIWALI MANTRAS & STOTRAS
Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (First Verse)
नमस्तेऽस्तु महामाये श्रीपीठे सुरपूजिते।
शङ्खचक्रगदाहस्ते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Namaste’stu Mahamaye Shreepithe Surapujite, Shankha-Chakra-Gada-Haste Mahalakshmi Namo’stu Te.
Meaning: Salutations to you, O great Goddess, who sits on the lotus, worshipped by gods, holding conch, discus, and mace.
Lakshmi Gayatri Mantra
ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै च विद्महे विष्णुप्रिययै च धीमहि।
तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात्॥
Om Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidmahe Vishnupriyayai Cha Dhimahi, Tanno Lakshmi Prachodayat.
Meaning: Let us meditate on Goddess Mahalakshmi, beloved of Vishnu; may she inspire and guide us.
Universal Peace Mantra
ॐ सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चिद् दुःख भाग्भवेत्॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥
Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve Santu Niramayah, Sarve Bhadrani Pashyantu Ma Kashchid Duhkha Bhagbhavet, Om Shantih Shantih Shantih.
Meaning: May all be happy, may all be healthy, may all experience prosperity, may none suffer.
ADDITIONAL DIWALI RITUALS
Deepdan (Lighting of Lamps)
Light 5, 11, 21, or 51 diyas throughout the home.
Place diyas at the entrance, in the puja room, and at all four corners of the house.
Light a special diya at the Tulsi plant.
Float diyas in water bodies if accessible.
Chopda Pujan (Account Book Worship)
Place new business account books before the deities.
Write “शुभ लाभ” (Shubh Labh – auspicious profit) on the first page.
Offer prayers for business prosperity.
Begin the new financial year for businesses.
Govardhan Puja (Day after Diwali)
Create a small hill representation with cow dung or clay.
Offer prayers commemorating Lord Krishna lifting Govardhan mountain.
Prepare Annakut (mountain of food) offerings.
IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
Maintain purity and cleanliness throughout the puja.
Perform puja with full devotion and concentration.
Women in menstruation may perform puja mentally.
Keep electronics silent during worship.
Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol on this sacred day.
Let the lamp remain lit throughout the night.
