Frequently Asked Questions
When is Diwali Lakshmi Puja in 2026?
Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Lakshmi Puja is performed in the evening during Pradosh Kaal after sunset, ideally when Sthir Lagna coincides with Amavasya Tithi, so check your local Panchang for the exact timing in your city.
Which mantras are chanted during Diwali puja?
The puja begins with Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha for Lord Ganesha, followed by Lakshmi mantras such as Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namaha and the Lakshmi Gayatri. Many families also chant the Kuber mantra, Om Aim Saraswatyai Namaha and the first verse of the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam.
What are the steps of Diwali Lakshmi puja vidhi at home?
The common sequence is sankalp, kalash sthapana, Ganesh pujan, Lakshmi avahan and the pancha upachara offerings of sandalwood paste, flowers, incense, lamp and food. It ends with Lakshmi Ashtak or Chalisa, aarti, prasad distribution and three clockwise pradakshinas.
Why is Lord Ganesha worshipped before Lakshmi on Diwali?
Ganesha is honoured as the remover of obstacles, so Hindu pujas traditionally begin with him. Devotees chant the Vakratunda Mahakaya shloka to ask that the worship and the year ahead proceed without hindrance before invoking Goddess Lakshmi.
How can NRIs perform Diwali puja abroad in 2026?
Diwali is also on Sunday, 8 November 2026 in the USA, UK and Canada, so families can hold the evening puja after local sunset using a Panchang for their own city rather than India timings. Govardhan Puja follows on 9 November in these countries and on 10 November in India.
