Quick answer: your Navratri Day 2 2026 Brahmacharini mantra, colour and bhog in brief: Day 2 is Monday 12 October 2026 (Ashwin Shukla Dwitiya in India, per Drik Panchang). The Goddess of the day is Maa Brahmacharini, the popular colour is white, the customary bhog is sugar or panchamrit, and her naam mantra is "Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah".
After the joyful welcome of Day 1, the second day turns inward. Maa Brahmacharini is the Goddess of tapas, the patient, devoted effort that does not give up. On a busy Monday, her quiet example is a gift: a simple lamp, a few mantras and a sincere heart are all she asks.

Who is Maa Brahmacharini? Her form and story
"Brahmacharini" means one who walks the path of Brahman, a seeker devoted to austerity and spiritual discipline. She is the second of the Navadurga and represents the Goddess as a young ascetic.
Her form: she is shown dressed in white, walking barefoot, with a japa mala (rosary) in her right hand and a kamandalu (water pot) in her left. Her dhyana shloka below describes exactly this: she holds the rosary and the water pot in her lotus-like hands. Unlike the warrior forms later in Navratri, she carries no weapon and rides no mount; her strength is her calm.
Her story, as commonly told: Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, set her heart on Lord Shiva and resolved to win him through tapas rather than charm. For many years she lived in the forest on fruits and roots, then only on fallen leaves, and finally gave up even leaves, which is why she is also called Aparna. Her mother Mena, worried, cried out "U ma" ("oh, don't"), and so the name Uma is also explained. Moved by her devotion, the sages and the gods praised her, and in time Shiva accepted her as his consort. Her story is remembered as a picture of steady, loving perseverance.
Spiritual significance of Day 2
As traditionally described, Day 2 is associated with the Svadhishthana chakra, linked with emotion and creative energy, and with the quality of disciplined devotion. Devotees believe that remembering Brahmacharini helps them stay steady with their own vows, whether a Navratri fast, a daily japa or a simple promise to be kinder at home. The day is less about outward celebration and more about quiet commitment.

Simple Day 2 puja vidhi at home
The kalash you set up on Day 1 stays in place. Today's puja is short and can be done after work.
- Freshen the altar: after bathing, wear clean clothes (white if you like), remove yesterday's flowers and sprinkle a little water on the barley tray if you sowed one.
- Lamp and incense: light the ghee lamp and an incense stick, and offer water to the kalash.
- Offer: kumkum, haldi, akshata and white flowers to the image of the Goddess.
- Chant: dhyana shloka, naam mantra 108 times, then the stuti.
- Bhog: offer sugar, or a small bowl of panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar), with fruit.
- Aarti: sing the Durga aarti your family knows and wave the lamp.
- Close: ask forgiveness for any shortcoming and share prasad.
Keep lamps on a metal plate, away from curtains, and never leave a flame unattended. For the whole nine-day routine, see the apartment-friendly Navratri 2026 puja vidhi, and for a fuller evergreen guide to this day, Navratri Day 2: Maa Brahmacharini puja complete rituals.
Bhog, flowers and colour for Maa Brahmacharini
Bhog: by popular custom, sugar or panchamrit. Some families share the sugar prasad with everyone in the home, especially children and elders. Bhog lists vary by tradition; see Navratri day-wise prasadam recipes for ideas.
Flowers: white jasmine or chrysanthemum are popular, matching her white attire; hibiscus and lotus are also offered.
Colour: white, the Monday colour in the popular weekday pattern. It suits her simple ascetic form, but it remains a community custom rather than a rule.
Fasting on Day 2: what to do and avoid
- Common vrat foods: fruit, milk, curd, sabudana, kuttu or singhara flour, potatoes, and rock salt (sendha namak).
- Commonly avoided: onion, garlic, meat, eggs, alcohol and, in many families, grains and table salt.

A short prayer and sankalpa for Day 2
In your own words, you might pray: "Maa Brahmacharini, you who walked the long path of devotion with patience, teach me steadiness. Help me keep my small vows these nine days, to pray, to fast as I am able, and to speak gently. I offer this day to you with love."
NRI angle: Day 2 on a working Monday

Our date tables follow Drik Panchang; for the end of the festival, note that Drik lists Durga Ashtami on 18 October and Maha Navami on 19 October in the USA, Canada and the UK, while both fall on 19 October in India.
