ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir is the temple of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, at the foot of the Tirumala hills (ISKCON). Local newspapers call it the Hare Krishna Lotus Temple of ISKCON and place it on Hare Krishna Road in the city (The Hans India; Deccan Chronicle). History of ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Govinda Mandir, Tirupati
According to ISKCON's own accounts, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) gave ISKCON land at the foot of the Tirumala hills in 1982, and devotees installed Sri Sri Radha Govinda in a small temple on 10 April 1984 (ISKCON). ISKCON says the project was revived in 1996, and its centre directory gives 4 June 1998 as the date of the bhumi puja for the present complex (ISKCON).
ISKCON records the inauguration of the present temple from 29 January to 1 February 2007, when the Radha Govinda, Ashta Sakhi and Giriraj deities were installed (ISKCON). ISKCON's news service reported that the temple opened to the public on 31 January 2007 (ISKCON).
In October 2024 the temple received a hoax bomb threat by email, one of several hoax threats in Tirupati within a few days; police searched the premises with bomb and dog squads and found nothing suspicious (Deccan Chronicle; Free Press Journal).
Architecture and sacred features
Newspapers refer to the building as the Lotus Temple (The Hans India; Deccan Chronicle). ISKCON describes a design in which the temple appears to rest on a lotus, with pink lotus petals around the base and a blend of north and south Indian styles (ISKCON).
