Faith & Tradition
Religious Significance of Dadhimati Mata Temple, Goth-Manglod
According to tradition recorded by Wikipedia and Zee News, Dadhimati is the sister of the sage Dadhichi and is regarded as a form of Lakshmi. Wikipedia notes that the Kapalapitha Mahatmya, a text associated with the shrine, explicitly calls her Mahalakshmi, describes her as dwelling in Vaikuntha, names Vishnu as her consort and Dadhichi as her brother. Legend places her birth on the seventh day of the bright half of Magha (Ratha Saptami). Wikipedia also describes the temple as one of the 52 Shaktipeeths.
Zee News reports that the temple is regarded as the only Dadhimati shrine where the goddess receives an abhishekam (ritual bath) with milk every day. Near the temple is a tank called Kapal Kund; devotees believe it never dries up and that bathing in it is beneficial, and during Navratri a palanquin carrying a symbolic form of the goddess is taken from the temple to the Kapal Kund.
Heritage
History of Dadhimati Mata Temple, Goth-Manglod
The earliest firm evidence is epigraphic. Wikipedia states that an inscription found at the temple shows it existed by 608 CE, and Zee News gives the construction date as Gupta Samvat 289, which corresponds to about 608 CE. Popular accounts, including Zee News headlines, describe the temple as 2,000 years old, but that figure is not supported by the inscription and is best read as a statement of devotion rather than of dating.
Local legends gathered by Zee News say that King Mandhata of Ayodhya performed a yajna here using four fire-pits fed by water from the Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati and Narmada, and that when Aurangzeb's army attacked, bees from a hive in the temple drove the soldiers away, which devotees attribute to the goddess. These are traditions, not documented history. In modern times the state archaeology department has declared the temple a protected monument, and a large dharamshala with many rooms has been built on the premises for pilgrims.
Architecture and sacred features
Zee News describes the temple's pillars and domes as made of a local stone (chhitar) with fine carving, and reports that the dome carries scenes from the Ramayana carved by hand. Wikipedia likewise notes depictions of the Valmiki Ramayana in the interior and early depictions of the Devi Mahatmya, though those statements are marked as needing citation there.
