About the role
Readers come to HinduTone to understand a festival, find a temple, learn the story behind a vrat or read a mantra with its meaning. Behind each page is a writer who researched carefully and wrote with respect. We are looking for a Freelance Devotional Content Writer (English, Hindi, Telugu) to take on assigned articles from our editors.
This is a freelance opportunity. You work from home, and we welcome applicants anywhere in India. HinduTone is the employer for these assignments, and you are paid per assignment. The rate is discussed with shortlisted freelancers.
You will write articles on festivals, temples, vrat kathas and traditions in English, Hindi or Telugu, based on briefs from HinduTone editors. You will cite reliable sources, deliver original drafts that are free of plagiarism and make revisions when the editor asks. The work suits writers who already have published samples on festivals, temples, mythology or culture, and who like to work independently with a clear brief. We are building a bench of dependable writers in all three languages, so you may be offered more assignments over time if the work is good, but we make no promise of a fixed volume.
What you will do
- Write assigned articles on festivals, temples, vrat kathas, rituals and cultural traditions from an editor's brief.
- Choose your working language from English, Hindi or Telugu as agreed with the editor for each assignment.
- Research each topic across several reliable sources and keep a list of those sources for the editor.
- Check festival dates, tithi and timings against reliable panchang and official sources, and mention clearly when practices differ by region.
- Deliver original, plagiarism-free drafts written in your own words and in the HinduTone style.
- Present traditions with respect and avoid medical, financial or astrological promises.
- Use headings, short paragraphs and plain language so that the article is easy to read on a phone.
- Follow SEO instructions in the brief, such as the target topic and suggested headings, without stuffing keywords.
- Revise drafts promptly after editor feedback and explain any change you think the editor should reconsider.
- Flag in the draft anything you could not verify so that the editor can decide how to handle it.
Skills we are looking for
Must have
- Published writing samples in English, Hindi or Telugu on festivals, temples, mythology or culture.
- Strong grammar, spelling and an easy, respectful style in the language you choose.
- Ability to research a topic and cite reliable sources for facts.
- Commitment to original writing, with no copying from other websites.
- Ability to keep to the deadline agreed for each assignment.
- Willingness to accept edits and make revisions.
Good to have
- Writing in more than one of the three languages.
- Basic knowledge of SEO and how headings and questions are used in articles.
- Familiarity with Hindu festivals and the basics of the panchang.
- Experience writing for a news site, magazine or publisher.
- Comfort with shared online documents and a stable internet connection.
Language and portfolio skills
We read your writing before we read your qualifications. A degree is not required. What we need is a clear, correct and natural voice in at least one of English, Hindi or Telugu, and the proof that you can handle a cultural subject carefully.
Strong samples are articles or blog posts that explain a festival, describe a temple's history or retell a vrat katha without exaggeration. Student writers, homemakers returning to work, retired teachers and early-career journalists with good samples are all welcome.
You should also be careful with Sanskrit and regional terms, and with names of deities, temples and places. If you write in Hindi or Telugu, your spelling and sentence flow matter greatly. If you write in English, we look for plain, warm Indian English that translators can adapt easily. You need a laptop or phone you can type on comfortably and a reliable internet connection.
How assignments work
Each assignment begins with a brief from a HinduTone editor. It sets the topic, the language, the length, the key questions to answer and any search or style notes. The deadline is agreed with you for each assignment, so that it suits both your schedule and our publishing plan.
You send the draft with your sources. The editor reviews it and may ask for revisions, which you make within a reasonable time. All work must be original, and every factual claim, especially dates, must be traceable to a reliable source. We cannot use copied or lightly reworded text from other sites.
Credit and byline policy is discussed per assignment, so please do not assume either way. Payment is per assignment and is discussed with shortlisted freelancers.
Preparing your application
- A short resume or profile that lists your languages and any publications, blogs or magazines you have written for.
- Links to three to five published samples on festivals, temples, mythology or culture, or the files if they are not online.
- A note on the language or languages in which you would like assignments.
- A brief description of how you research and verify dates and facts.
- Mention your city or state, as we welcome applicants anywhere in India.
- Tell us the topics you know best, such as a regional festival, a temple tradition or a family custom.
