Diwali 2026 in Rwanda: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Temples
Lakshmi Puja in Rwanda falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the muhurat from 6:19 PM to 8:11 PM in Kigali. Here are the five days, timings for nine towns and where the small Hindu community gathers.
Quick answer: in Rwanda, Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Kigali muhurat is 6:19 PM to 8:11 PM Rwanda time. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The same dates apply in every town in Rwanda; only the evening timings shift by a few minutes. Rwanda's Hindu community is small and centred on Kigali, where the Hindu Mandal of Rwanda looks after a temple, so many families mark the evening with a puja at home.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates using Drik Panchang tithi times and Drik's own rules for each festival day, and we checked our method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules, because community programmes change from year to year; please confirm details with the temple or association directly.
Diwali 2026 dates in Rwanda
These are the five days of Diwali for Kigali. They are the same across the country.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November 2026 | Day of wealth and health; buying metal, lighting the first lamp, Dhanvantari puja |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Early-morning abhyanga snan; marks Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Main night: Lakshmi and Ganesha puja at muhurat, diyas lit around the home |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November 2026 | Offering of many foods to Krishna; Gujarati New Year for many families |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday 10 November 2026 | Sisters perform tilak and pray for their brothers' wellbeing |
Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day in 2026. In India time, Chaturdashi ends and Amavasya begins at 11:27 AM IST on 8 November, so the Chaturdashi bath belongs to the early morning of Sunday 8 November and Lakshmi Puja to the evening. In Rwanda time, Amavasya runs from Sun 8 Nov, 7:57 AM → Mon 9 Nov, 9:01 AM, which covers the whole of Sunday evening. That is why Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November and Govardhan Puja moves to Monday 9 November.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained
Lakshmi Puja is done on the Amavasya (new moon) evening of Kartik. Two windows matter. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period of about two and a half hours that starts at sunset. In Kigali, sunset on Sunday 8 November is at 5:49 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:49 PM to 8:11 PM.
The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna. Vrishabha is a 'fixed' (sthira) sign, and tradition holds that worshipping Lakshmi while a fixed sign is rising helps her blessings stay in the home. In Kigali, Vrishabha rises during Pradosh Kaal, and the overlap of the two gives the muhurat of 6:19 PM to 8:11 PM. That is the best time to begin the main puja.
If you cannot start inside the muhurat, any time within Pradosh Kaal is still considered good for Lakshmi Puja. Here are the sunset, Pradosh Kaal and muhurat for each town.
| City | Sunset | Pradosh Kaal | Lakshmi Puja muhurat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kigali | 5:49 PM | 5:49 PM – 8:11 PM | 6:19 PM – 8:11 PM |
| Gisenyi | 5:52 PM | 5:52 PM – 8:14 PM | 6:21 PM – 8:14 PM |
| Musanze | 5:50 PM | 5:50 PM – 8:12 PM | 6:19 PM – 8:12 PM |
| Nyagatare | 5:47 PM | 5:47 PM – 8:09 PM | 6:16 PM – 8:09 PM |
| Gitarama | 5:50 PM | 5:50 PM – 8:12 PM | 6:20 PM – 8:12 PM |
| Muhanga | 5:50 PM | 5:50 PM – 8:12 PM | 6:20 PM – 8:12 PM |
| Butare | 5:51 PM | 5:51 PM – 8:12 PM | 6:21 PM – 8:12 PM |
| Kibuye | 5:52 PM | 5:52 PM – 8:13 PM | 6:22 PM – 8:13 PM |
| Rwamagana | 5:47 PM | 5:47 PM – 8:09 PM | 6:17 PM – 8:09 PM |
Hindu temples in Rwanda for Diwali
Rwanda's Hindu community is small, and we have only been able to confirm a few places where it gathers, all in Kigali. We list only those we could verify, and we would rather keep this list short than guess.
Kigali
- Hindu Mandal of Rwanda (Kigali): the Hindu community organisation that looks after the Hindu temple in Kigali. This is the main place for pujas, havans and festival gatherings.
- Indian Association of Rwanda (Kigali): the community association for people of Indian origin in Rwanda. In recent years it has organised a Diwali gathering in Kigali for families, friends and Rwandan guests.
- High Commission of India (Kigali): not a place of worship, but it supports Indian cultural events and can point newcomers to community groups.
Outside Kigali
We could not confirm any Hindu temple outside the capital. If you live in Musanze, Gisenyi, Huye or elsewhere, a home puja at the muhurat for your town is a perfectly complete way to celebrate, and you may wish to travel to Kigali for a community gathering on the weekend.
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. If you would like a priest to perform a puja at home, ask the Hindu Mandal early, as requests cluster around the main evening.
How Diwali is celebrated in Rwanda
People of Indian origin have lived in Rwanda for decades, many first as traders and later as business owners, engineers, doctors, teachers and staff of international organisations. Families come from across India, with Gujarati, Punjabi, South Indian and other traditions all represented, and some have roots in neighbouring East African countries. The community is far smaller than in Uganda or Kenya, which shapes how Diwali is kept here: it is a close, family-centred festival.
At home, families clean and decorate the house, draw rangoli at the entrance, light diyas and candles at dusk and perform Lakshmi and Ganesha puja at the muhurat. Sweets such as ladoos, barfi and kaju katli are made at home or shared between friends, since Indian sweet shops are few. Community Diwali programmes typically include a puja or aarti, bhajans, dance and music performances by children and adults, and a shared vegetarian meal. These gatherings often welcome Rwandan friends, colleagues and neighbours too.
Gujarati families mark the new year on Govardhan Puja day, and Bhai Dooj is kept at home. Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day as Diwali, and Jain families observe Lord Mahavira's nirvana. Whatever your tradition, the spirit is the same: light over darkness, and the home opened to family and friends.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
You do not need a priest for a meaningful Lakshmi Puja. A simple vidhi, suitable for any home:
- Clean the house during the day and draw a rangoli or place flowers at the front door.
- Bathe before sunset and set up a clean platform covered with a red or yellow cloth.
- Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water with mango or other leaves and a coconut, and a plate with rice, kumkum, turmeric, flowers and sweets.
- Light a ghee or oil lamp. Begin with Ganesha: offer flowers and rice and say a short prayer or Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
- Offer Lakshmi flowers, kumkum, rice, sweets, fruit and coins. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah, or read the Shri Suktam if you know it.
- Perform aarti together, then light diyas around the house, at windows and at the doorway.
- Share prasad with the family and with neighbours or friends.
In Kigali, aim to start between 6:19 PM and 8:11 PM. If that is not possible, any time in Pradosh Kaal, from 5:49 PM to 8:11 PM, is fine.
Practical tips for Diwali in Rwanda
- Weekdays: Lakshmi Puja falls on a Sunday, which makes the main evening easy for working families. Dhanteras (Friday), Govardhan Puja (Monday) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday) fall on working days. Diwali is not on the government's published list of public holidays, so check the official 2026 holiday list and plan leave early.
- Early sunset: Rwanda is close to the equator, so sunset is early and steady all year, around 5:47 PM to 5:52 PM across the country on 8 November. Have your puja ready before dusk.
- Rainy season: November is part of Rwanda's short rainy season, so evening showers are common. Keep diyas under cover or use glass holders, and plan an indoor space for any gathering.
- Fireworks: rules are set by the authorities. Check locally before buying or lighting any, and keep lamps and candles away from curtains and children.
- Book early: if you want a priest or a special puja through the Hindu Mandal, ask well ahead of 8 November.
- Puja supplies: items such as diyas, kumkum and incense may be limited in Rwanda. Ask friends in the community, or buy ahead when travelling through Kampala, Nairobi or India.

Diyas and candles at home are fine with sensible fire safety. Rules on fireworks are set by the authorities, so check locally before buying or lighting any. Many families in Rwanda keep the celebration to lamps, rangoli and sweets.
