Diwali 2026 in the Dominican Republic centres on Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November 2026. In Santo Domingo the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 6:29 PM to 8:29 PM local time (UTC-4). The festival opens with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November and closes with Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Every Dominican city we checked keeps the same five dates; only the evening clock times shift by a minute or two with sunset.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's own rules for each festival day, and we checked our method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes each year.

These are the five days of Diwali for Santo Domingo. The dates are the same in Santiago de los Caballeros, Puerto Plata, La Romana and every other city below.

DayDateWhat it is
DhanterasFriday 6 November 2026Worship of Dhanvantari and Lakshmi; a traditional day to buy metal utensils or gold
Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)Saturday 7 November 2026Early bath, first diyas, remembering Krishna's victory over Narakasura

Bhai DoojTuesday 10 November 2026Sisters pray for their brothers' wellbeing; brothers give gifts in return

For the story behind each day, see our guide to the 5 days of Diwali explained. The new moon (Amavasya) runs in the Dominican Republic from Sun 8 Nov, 1:57 AM → Mon 9 Nov, 3:01 AM local time, so the whole of Sunday evening sits inside Amavasya. In Indian Standard Time, Amavasya begins at 11:27 AM on 8 November and ends at 12:31 PM on 9 November (IST). The Dominican Republic is nine and a half hours behind India, which is why the local clock times look so different from the ones relatives in India will be using.

Santo Domingo Oeste, Bella Vista and Puerto Plata share the capital's muhurat. Santiago de los Caballeros and San Cristóbal begin a minute later, while the eastern cities of San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana are a few minutes earlier, because the sun sets there first. If your town is not listed, including Punta Cana and the other resort areas of the east, use the nearest city and allow a few minutes either side.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained

Two windows of time matter on Diwali evening. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half hours that begins at sunset. Lakshmi Puja is meant to be performed during Pradosh Kaal while Amavasya is current. In Santo Domingo, sunset on Sunday 8 November is at 6:04 PM, and Pradosh Kaal runs from 6:04 PM to 8:35 PM.

The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna, the time when the fixed sign Taurus is rising in the east. Vrishabha is a sthira (fixed) lagna, and tradition holds that Lakshmi worshipped in a fixed lagna stays in the home. Where Vrishabha overlaps Pradosh Kaal, that overlap is the most auspicious muhurat. In Santo Domingo this year the overlap is 6:29 PM to 8:29 PM.

In practice: have the puja space ready and the family bathed and dressed before sunset, light the first diyas at around 6:04 PM, and begin the main Lakshmi-Ganesha puja after 6:29 PM, completing it before 8:29 PM. If something delays you, any time within Pradosh Kaal, up to 8:35 PM, is still acceptable. Amavasya continues until 3:01 AM on Monday 9 November locally, so lamps can keep burning through the night.

For India's timings and a fuller explanation of how the muhurat is worked out, see our main Diwali 2026 date and Lakshmi Puja muhurat guide.

Hindu temples in the Dominican Republic for Diwali

The Dominican Republic has a very small Hindu community, and we could confirm only one dedicated Hindu temple. We have listed only what we could verify through official or reliable sources, without timings or addresses. Please contact each group directly before you visit.

Santo Domingo

  • ISKCON Santo Domingo (Hare Krishna temple), eastern Santo Domingo. ISKCON has been active in the country for around five decades, and Sri Sri Gaura Nitai are the presiding deities. ISKCON News has reported a campaign by the devotees to build a larger temple. It is the most likely place in the country to find a Diwali or Govardhan Puja programme open to all.
  • Embassy of India in the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. Not a temple, but the embassy, opened in 2022, runs Indian cultural events through the year and helped form a new Indian Association in 2025. It is a good first contact for newcomers looking for other Indian families.

Santiago and elsewhere

ISKCON News reports that the movement holds two Rathayatra festivals a year, one in Santo Domingo and one in Santiago de los Caballeros, so there are Krishna devotees in the north too. We could not confirm a current permanent temple in Santiago, Puerto Plata or the Punta Cana area, so ask ISKCON Santo Domingo about gatherings near you.

India's Ministry of External Affairs also notes that the Art of Living, the Swaminarayan Gurukul, Paramahansa Yogananda meditation centres and followers of Sathya Sai Baba have a presence in the Dominican Republic, with followers across the country. We could not confirm the location of a temple or centre for each of these, so we have not listed them separately. If you belong to one of these traditions, your own satsang network is the best guide to any local Diwali gathering.

Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. Such programmes typically include a Lakshmi Puja with aarti, kirtan, a shared vegetarian meal and, on Govardhan Puja, an Annakut offering of many dishes. For most Indian families in the country, though, the main Lakshmi Puja will be the one they perform at home.

How Diwali is celebrated in the Dominican Republic

Unlike Trinidad, Guyana or Suriname, the Dominican Republic did not receive large numbers of indentured workers from India, and there is no long-settled Indo-Caribbean population. India's Ministry of External Affairs estimated in July 2026 that about 100 Indian nationals and people of Indian origin live in the country, mainly engineers, software professionals, staff of Indian companies and business people, spread across Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and Santiago.

Diwali here is therefore a quiet, family-centred festival. Homes are cleaned and lit with diyas and fairy lights, a rangoli is drawn at the door, and families perform Lakshmi Puja together, then share sweets with friends and neighbours. With few Indian grocers, many people improvise: tea lights instead of clay diyas, locally available flowers and fruit for the offering, and sweets made at home. Dominican devotees of ISKCON and the various meditation and yoga movements add a local flavour, and the festival is often a chance to invite Dominican friends to see a puja for the first time.

Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, remembering Guru Hargobind's release from Gwalior fort, and Jain families observe Diwali as the day of Lord Mahavira's nirvana. Whatever your tradition, the lamps lit on Amavasya carry the same meaning: light over darkness.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

If you cannot reach a temple, a simple puja at home is complete in itself. A short outline:

  • Clean the house during the day, especially the entrance and the puja area. Draw a rangoli at the door and place a diya on each side.
  • Before sunset, set up a raised platform with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and a plate of rice grains.
  • Arrange offerings: flowers, haldi-kumkum, akshat (unbroken rice), sweets, fruit, a few coins or a piece of jewellery, and account books or a laptop if you keep business accounts.
  • Within the muhurat, light the main ghee lamp, invoke Ganesha first and then Lakshmi. Offer each item with a simple mantra such as "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah", recite the Lakshmi Ashtakam or another prayer you know, and perform aarti.
  • Light diyas through the house and at the doorway, share prasad with the family and call relatives, especially elders, to seek their blessings.

Many families keep one lamp burning through the night. For ideas for the offering and the festive meal, see our Diwali recipes guide.

Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in the Dominican Republic

  • Weekdays: Dhanteras is a Friday, Naraka Chaturdashi a Saturday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, so the main days fall over the weekend. Govardhan Puja is on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November.
  • Holidays: Diwali is not a public holiday. Constitution Day falls on Friday 6 November, and Dominican press reports of the Ministry of Labour's 2026 calendar say the day off moves to Monday 9 November, giving many people a long weekend over Diwali. Check the official 2026 holiday list to be sure.
  • Weather and sunset: Early November is still within the Atlantic hurricane season and evening showers are common. Sunset in Santo Domingo is at 6:04 PM on Diwali, so finish cooking and preparations before then and keep outdoor diyas sheltered from wind and rain.
  • Fireworks: Rules on fireworks are set by the national and municipal authorities and can change. Check the current rules before buying any, and see our green crackers guide for lower-smoke options.
  • Puja supplies: Indian groceries are limited, so order murtis, ghee, incense and puja items in good time, or bring them back from a trip abroad.
  • Temple pujas: If you would like a priest or devotee to help with a puja at home, ask early. There are very few in the country and the Diwali weekend fills quickly.
  • Calling India: India is nine and a half hours ahead. When your Lakshmi Puja starts on Sunday evening, it is already Monday morning in India.
