Diwali 2026 in Jamaica: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Hindu Temples
Lakshmi Puja in Jamaica falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Vrishabha muhurat from 5:57 PM to 7:57 PM in Kingston. Here are the five days, city timings and where Jamaica's small Hindu community gathers.
Quick answer: in Jamaica, Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Kingston muhurat is 5:57 PM to 7:57 PM Jamaica time. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Jamaica's Hindu community is small but rooted in more than 180 years of Indian heritage, and its main temple is in Kingston, so many families will mark the evening with a home puja.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's own rules for each festival, and checked our method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset. We do not list event schedules, because they change every year. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

Amavasya in Jamaica runs from Sun 8 Nov, 12:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 2:01 AM local time (11:27 AM 8 Nov to 12:31 PM 9 Nov IST). Because Jamaica is behind India, Amavasya begins in the small hours of Sunday, so Sunday evening is the only evening with Amavasya during Pradosh Kaal. That is why Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, while the pre-dawn Naraka Chaturdashi bath falls on Saturday morning, when Chaturdashi is still running.
Diwali 2026 city by city in Jamaica
Jamaica uses one time zone all year (UTC-5, with no daylight saving), and the island is small, so the timings differ by only a few minutes from east to west. Montego Bay, furthest west in our list, has the latest sunset and muhurat. Times are local Jamaica time.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Jamaica explained
Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening of Amavasya, during Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half hours that begins at sunset. In Kingston on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 5:32 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:32 PM to 8:03 PM.
Within Pradosh, families prefer the time when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worship done in a fixed lagna is believed to make Lakshmi's blessing stay in the home. In Kingston, Vrishabha rises at 5:57 PM and sets at 7:57 PM, both inside Pradosh, so the muhurat is 5:57 PM to 7:57 PM.
If you cannot start by 7:57 PM, you can still do the puja at any time in Pradosh Kaal, up to 8:03 PM. Lighting the first diya at sunset and then sitting for the main Lakshmi Ganesha puja inside the muhurat is a practical approach for busy households.
For reference, the tithis on Drik Panchang (IST) are: Trayodashi from 10:30 AM 6 Nov to 10:47 AM 7 Nov; Chaturdashi until 11:27 AM 8 Nov; Amavasya from 11:27 AM 8 Nov to 12:31 PM 9 Nov; Pratipada until 2:00 PM 10 Nov; and Dwitiya until 3:53 PM 11 Nov. These are India times; the Jamaica dates in the tables above already account for the difference.
Hindu temples in Jamaica for Diwali
Jamaica has very few Hindu places of worship, and we have listed only those we could confirm through reliable sources. We have kept to names and areas only; please check directly for darshan times and Diwali arrangements.
Kingston
- Sanatan Dharma Mandir (also called the Sanatan Hindu Temple) – Kingston. Built around 1970 and widely described as the only Hindu temple recognised by the Jamaican government; it is the main focus for Hindu festivals on the island.
- High Commission of India, Kingston – India House, Kingston. Not a temple, but the mission works with the Indian community on cultural occasions, and in December 2025 it marked Diwali's inscription on UNESCO's intangible heritage list with the community.
Older reports mention another small Hindu place of worship in Kingston, and a few private or family shrines elsewhere, but we could not confirm any of them as active today, so we have not named them. We could not confirm a Hindu temple in Montego Bay, Mandeville, May Pen or Ocho Rios. If you live outside Kingston, a home puja at the muhurat in our table is the simplest and most meaningful way to celebrate. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
How Diwali is celebrated in Jamaica
Indians first arrived in Jamaica as indentured labourers in 1845, landing at Old Harbour Bay, and around 36,000 came to work on the sugar estates before the system ended in the early twentieth century. After their contracts ended, many stayed, and a good number moved to Kingston to work as shopkeepers, jewellers, barbers and fishermen. Jamaica marks Indian Arrival Day each May in remembrance of that journey.
Over the generations many Indo-Jamaican families became Christian and much of the language and ritual faded, while Indian food, words and customs became part of everyday Jamaican life. Hindus today are a small minority, a mix of descendants of the indentured families who kept the faith and more recent arrivals from India and elsewhere in the Caribbean. One challenge the community has spoken about openly is the shortage of resident priests, which is one reason home worship matters so much here.
Settlers in Jamaica held weekend prayer meetings and special gatherings for weddings and festivals such as Diwali, which they connected with harvest, the return of Rama after fourteen years of exile and the victory of good over evil. In the Caribbean tradition the festival is often written Divali. Homes are cleaned and decorated in the days before, Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped on the night of Amavasya, and clay diyas are lit along doorsteps, windows and verandahs.
Temple and community programmes in Jamaica, where they take place, typically include a Lakshmi Puja, bhajans, aarti, a shared vegetarian meal and sometimes Indian dance or music. Families with roots elsewhere in the Caribbean often bring their own Divali customs, such as rows of deyas and parsad made at home. Any Sikh families may mark Bandi Chhor Divas the same evening, and Jain families mark Diwali as the day of Lord Mahavira's nirvana.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
You do not need a priest for a meaningful Lakshmi Puja, which matters in Jamaica where priests are few. A short, general vidhi that suits most traditions:
- Clean the puja area and set a low table with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or murtis of Ganesha and Lakshmi, with a kalash of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut.
- Light a ghee diya and an incense stick. Draw a small rangoli or place footprints of Lakshmi at the entrance.
- Begin with Ganesha: offer flowers, kumkum and a sweet, and chant 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah'.
- Worship Lakshmi with flowers, kumkum, rice, coins or jewellery, and sweets such as ladoo, kheer or mohan bhog. Chant 'Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah' 11 or 108 times, or read the Shri Suktam.
- Many families also place account books, a laptop or a cash box before the deity for blessing.
- Finish with aarti ('Om Jai Lakshmi Mata'), then light diyas around the home: entrance, windows, kitchen and verandah.
- Share prasad with family and neighbours.
Aim to do the main worship within the muhurat for your city. If that is not possible, any time in Pradosh Kaal is fine.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Jamaica
- Weekdays: Dhanteras is on a Friday, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday and Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, so the main evening is on a weekend this year. Govardhan Puja (Monday) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday) are working days. Check the official 2026 holiday list and your employer's policy if you need time off.
- Sunset and weather: Sunset in Kingston is at 5:32 PM and it gets dark quickly in the tropics. Early November can still bring showers and breezy evenings, so keep outdoor diyas sheltered or use glass lanterns.
- Fireworks: Rules on fireworks are set by the authorities. Check before buying or lighting any, and consider quieter alternatives such as diyas and lanterns.
- Temple pujas: If you want a pandit to perform Lakshmi Puja for your family, ask the temple well in advance, as there are very few priests on the island.
- Puja items: Diyas, ghee, kumkum and Indian sweets can be hard to find in Jamaica. Shop early in Kingston, ask friends travelling from abroad, or improvise with tealights and home-made sweets.
