Diwali 2026 in Mexico: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Mexico City the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 6:23 PM to 8:23 PM. The five days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Mexico has four time zones in use, so Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez and Cancún have very different clock times; check your city in the table below.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates with Drik Panchang tithi times and Drik's rules for each festival day, and checked the method against Drik Panchang's own dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset and time zone. We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes each year.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained

Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening of the Amavasya (new moon) of Kartik. Two windows matter.

  • Pradosh Kaal: the period of about two and a half hours that begins at sunset. In Mexico City sunset on 8 November is at 5:59 PM, and Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:59 PM to 8:32 PM.
  • Vrishabha lagna: Taurus, a fixed (sthir) sign, rising on the eastern horizon. Doing the puja while a fixed sign rises is believed to help Lakshmi stay in the home. In Mexico City Vrishabha rises inside Pradosh Kaal from 6:23 PM to 8:23 PM, which is the recommended muhurat.

In every Mexican city in our table, Vrishabha rises within Pradosh Kaal, so each city has a proper Vrishabha muhurat. If you cannot begin inside the muhurat, any time within Pradosh Kaal is still considered auspicious. Families who follow a different tradition, such as a Nishita Kaal (midnight) puja, should follow their own family custom or their temple.

Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana have shorter muhurat windows because Vrishabha sets earlier relative to their sunset: 5:32 PM to 7:26 PM in Ciudad Juárez and 5:13 PM to 7:06 PM in Tijuana. Plan to have the puja thali ready before sunset there.

Hindu temples in Mexico for Diwali

Mexico's Hindu community is small. The Indian community, according to the Embassy of India, numbers several thousand people, with about a third in Mexico City and others in cities such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, Querétaro and Tijuana. There are also Mexican devotees, many of them connected with ISKCON. We have confirmed the following places. We could not confirm a temple in Tijuana, Ciudad Juárez, Puebla, León or Cancún, so families there usually celebrate at home or travel.

Mexico City

  • ISKCON Mexico City (Hare Krishna temple), Colonia San Miguel Chapultepec. One of ISKCON's oldest centres in Latin America, founded in the early 1970s. Diwali and Govardhan Puja are usually marked here.
  • Indian Association of Mexico, Mexico City. The community association that organises cultural and festival programmes, often with the Embassy.
  • Embassy of India in Mexico, Mexico City. The Embassy holds cultural events with the diaspora through the year.
  • Gurdwara in Mexico City. The small Sikh community has a gurdwara in the Mexico City area; Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas at this time of year.

Guadalajara

  • ISKCON Guadalajara (Nueva Nilachala Mandir), Colonia Americana. Known locally for its Ratha Yatra and vegetarian kitchen.

Querétaro

  • Ram temple, Santiago de Querétaro. Mexico's first temple dedicated to Lord Ram, consecrated in January 2024 with murtis brought from India, in a ceremony attended by both Indian and Mexican devotees.

Monterrey

  • ISKCON devotees in Monterrey. The local Hare Krishna community runs a weekly Food for Life prasadam programme. Contact them for details of any Diwali gathering.

Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. If none of these places is near you, a home puja on Sunday evening is entirely proper.

How Diwali is celebrated in Mexico

Hindus in Mexico are a mix of Indian families who arrived as professionals, engineers, doctors, business owners and students, mostly from the late twentieth century onwards, and Mexican devotees who came to Hindu practice through ISKCON, yoga and Vedanta. There was no indentured migration to Mexico of the kind seen in the Caribbean, so the community is newer and spread thinly across a large country.

Diwali arrives just after Mexico's own festival of lights and remembrance, Día de Muertos on 1 and 2 November, when homes and cemeteries glow with candles and marigolds. Many Mexican friends find the diyas, rangoli and marigold garlands of Diwali familiar, and families often invite neighbours and colleagues to share sweets.

Typical community programmes include a Lakshmi Puja or aarti, bhajans, classical dance and music, a shared vegetarian meal and lighting of diyas. At ISKCON centres the focus is often on kirtan, a Govardhan Puja with an Annakut of many dishes on the following day, and prasadam for visitors. Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas at the gurdwara, and Jain families observe Diwali as the anniversary of Lord Mahavira's nirvana.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

If you are far from a temple, a simple puja at home is all that is needed.

  1. Clean the home in the days before and decorate the entrance with a rangoli and a toran of marigolds or mango leaves. Cempasúchil (Mexican marigolds) are easy to find in early November.
  2. Set up a clean low table with a red or yellow cloth, an image or murti of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water topped with a coconut and mango leaves, and a few coins or jewellery.
  3. Light a ghee diya before the muhurat begins. In Mexico City, start the puja between 6:23 PM and 8:23 PM.
  4. Begin with Ganesha: offer flowers, kumkum, rice and a sweet, and chant a simple mantra such as Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
  5. Worship Lakshmi with flowers, kumkum, haldi, rice, sweets, fruit and dry fruit. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah or read the Lakshmi Ashtakam if you know it.
  6. Perform aarti together, then light diyas around the home, at the door and on windowsills.
  7. Share prasad with family and neighbours.

Keep diyas away from curtains and children, and never leave flames unattended.

Practical tips

  • Weekday and holidays: Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November, so the evening puja is easy for most families. Diwali is not a statutory rest day in Mexico; Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November fall on working days, so plan leave early if you need it.
  • Sunset and weather: In Mexico City the sun sets at 5:59 PM, and evenings in November are cool at altitude, so a shawl for an outdoor aarti is sensible. Cancún is warm and humid, with sunset at 6:08 PM; in Tijuana sunset is at 4:51 PM.
  • Fireworks: rules on buying and setting off fireworks are set by local authorities and vary by state and municipality. Check before you buy, and consider quieter, cleaner alternatives.
  • Temple pujas: with only a handful of temples, popular Diwali slots fill up quickly. Contact the temple early if you want a family puja or to sponsor the Annakut.
  • Puja supplies: diyas, kumkum and incense can be hard to find outside the largest cities, so buy or order them a week or two ahead. Ghee and marigolds are widely available.
