Diwali 2026 in the Bahamas: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Nassau the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:47 PM to 7:45 PM local time (UTC-5). Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are the same on New Providence and Grand Bahama; only the evening muhurat moves by a few minutes.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival day, and we checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules: temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead, so check their websites and social pages.

All times are local (UTC-5). The Bahamas returns to standard time at the start of November, so these timings already reflect the change of clocks.

Nassau and Killarney are both on New Providence; Freeport and Lucaya are on Grand Bahama. If you live on one of the Family Islands, use the nearest city in the table. Islands further east, such as Eleuthera and Exuma, have a slightly earlier sunset, so begin a few minutes earlier if you can, or simply use the whole Pradosh Kaal.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in the Bahamas explained

Two windows decide the best time for Lakshmi Puja. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period of about two and a half hours that begins at sunset. In Nassau on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 5:24 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:24 PM to 8:00 PM.

The second is Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna, the ascendant considered fixed (sthira). A puja done in a fixed lagna is believed to help Lakshmi stay in the home. In Nassau, Vrishabha rises at 5:47 PM and sets at 7:45 PM, both inside Pradosh Kaal, so the recommended muhurat is 5:47 PM to 7:45 PM.

On Grand Bahama the logic is the same. In Freeport, sunset is at 5:28 PM, Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:28 PM to 8:04 PM and the muhurat is 5:51 PM to 7:47 PM. In Lucaya, sunset is at 5:27 PM and the muhurat is 5:50 PM to 7:46 PM. If you cannot start within the muhurat, any time in your city's Pradosh Kaal is still traditionally acceptable, and a sincere puja at a convenient hour is better than none.

Hindu temples in the Bahamas for Diwali

We searched carefully and could not confirm any Hindu temple, ISKCON centre or other dedicated place of Hindu worship in the Bahamas. We will not name a temple we cannot verify. What we could confirm is listed below; check each organisation's own pages for current details.

Nassau, New Providence

  • Indian Association of The Bahamas – a Nassau-based non-profit for the Indian community that has organised religious and cultural events, including Diwali gatherings with lamp lighting, in past years. It is the most likely place to hear about any community celebration.

Diplomatic contact

  • High Commission of India, Kingston (Jamaica) – India has no resident mission in the Bahamas; the High Commission in Kingston is accredited to the Bahamas and has held consular camps for the community there. It is a useful contact if you are new to the country.

For most Hindu families in the Bahamas, Diwali is a home festival. A Lakshmi Puja at home at the muhurat in the table above is the simplest and most traditional way to mark the night, and inviting friends and neighbours to share sweets afterwards is how many small communities keep the festival alive. Some families also travel to Florida, where there are many temples, but check the date there, as the United States has its own timings.

How Diwali is celebrated in the Bahamas

The Hindu community in the Bahamas is very small. Unlike Trinidad and Tobago or Guyana, the Bahamas did not receive large numbers of indentured labourers from India in the nineteenth century, so there is no long-established Indo-Bahamian community of that kind. Today's Hindus are mainly Indian professionals and their families, including doctors, engineers, business owners and hotel and tourism staff, together with some families of Guyanese and Trinidadian origin who may call the festival Divali. Official estimates put the resident Indian community at a few hundred people, many of them long settled and well integrated into Bahamian life.

Because there is no temple, celebrations tend to happen at home and at community gatherings in a hired hall. Such Diwali programmes typically include the lighting of lamps, a short puja or arati, bhajans, Indian dance and music by children, and a shared vegetarian dinner. Bahamian friends and colleagues are often invited, and in past years Indian diplomats and Bahamian officials have joined the lamp lighting in Nassau. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

At home, families clean and decorate the house, draw rangoli at the entrance, light diyas or candles on the evening of Lakshmi Puja and share sweets with neighbours. Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas at the same time, and Jain families observe Diwali as the day of Mahavira's nirvana, so the week carries meaning across several traditions.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

You do not need a priest or a long list of items. A short, sincere puja at your city's muhurat is enough.

  1. Clean the house during the day and make a small, tidy altar facing east or north.
  2. Place an image or murti of Lakshmi with Ganesha on her left, on a red or yellow cloth, with a kalash of water topped with mango or betel leaves if you have them.
  3. Bathe and wear clean clothes. Light a ghee or oil diya and some incense at the start of the muhurat.
  4. Begin with Ganesha: offer a flower and say 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah'.
  5. Offer Lakshmi kumkum, rice, flowers, sweets, fruit and a few coins or new notes. Chant 'Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah' 11 or 108 times.
  6. Perform arati, then light diyas or candles at the doorway, windows and every room.
  7. Share the prasad with family and neighbours. Many families keep one lamp burning through the night.

If the Vrishabha muhurat does not suit your household, do the puja at any time within Pradosh Kaal for your city.

Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in the Bahamas

  • Weekend timing: Dhanteras is a Friday, Naraka Chaturdashi a Saturday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, so the main days fall conveniently. Govardhan Puja (Monday) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday) are working days for most people; check the official 2026 holiday list and plan leave early if you need it.
  • Early sunset: With standard time back and sunset before half past five, the muhurat starts not long after work. Prepare the altar and food in the afternoon so you are ready by 5:47 PM in Nassau.
  • Weather: November evenings are usually warm and pleasant, but sea breezes can blow out diyas. Use lamps with glass covers or place them in sheltered spots, and keep flames away from curtains and dry palm fronds.
  • Fireworks: Rules on fireworks are set by the authorities, so check what is allowed where you live, and consider lamps, candles and fairy lights instead.
  • Supplies: Indian groceries and puja items are limited on the islands. Buy ghee, cotton wicks, incense and kumkum early or bring them back from a trip abroad; candles and local flowers are perfectly acceptable.
  • Community events: If you would like to join a gathering or arrange a group puja, contact the Indian Association of The Bahamas well ahead, as small communities rely on volunteers.
