Diwali 2026 in Ukraine: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Kyiv the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 4:36 PM to 6:15 PM local time (UTC+2). Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi is observed early on the morning of Sunday 8 November in most cities, Govardhan Puja is on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The main dates are the same in every Ukrainian city we checked; only the evening muhurat shifts between the east and the west of the country.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival day, and we checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's own sunset. We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes each year. With the war still affecting daily life, please also follow official safety guidance and local alerts when planning any gathering.

Lviv is the one city where Naraka Chaturdashi falls on Saturday 7 November. Lviv is far to the west, and under Drik's rule for the early-morning bath the Chaturdashi observance falls on Saturday morning there. Everything else, including Lakshmi Puja on Sunday evening, is the same as Kyiv.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained

Lakshmi Puja is performed on the Amavasya evening during Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half to three hours that begins at sunset. In Kyiv on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 4:22 PM and Pradosh Kaal runs from 4:22 PM to 7:18 PM.

Within Pradosh, the most favoured window is when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worship during a fixed lagna is believed to help Lakshmi stay in the home. In Kyiv Vrishabha rises inside Pradosh from 4:36 PM to 6:15 PM, which is the muhurat we give.

If you cannot finish the puja inside that window, the whole of Pradosh Kaal is still considered suitable. Kharkiv and Donetsk, in the east, have the earliest sunset of the cities listed (4:01 PM and 4:00 PM), while Lviv in the west has sunset at 4:50 PM and a muhurat from 5:05 PM to 6:44 PM.

Hindu temples in Ukraine for Diwali

Ukraine does not have a large, long-established Indian diaspora in the way the UK or the Caribbean do, but it does have one of Europe's most active Hare Krishna (ISKCON) movements, made up mainly of Ukrainian devotees. ISKCON was formally registered in Ukraine around 1990, and before the full-scale war it had temples or centres in dozens of cities. Several have been damaged, closed or turned into shelters and food-relief points since 2022, so the status of any centre can change. Contact them before you travel.

These are the places we were able to confirm from ISKCON's own directory and news reports. We have not padded the list; if your city is missing, a home puja is a good choice.

Kyiv

  • ISKCON Kyiv temple (Kyiv) — the largest Hare Krishna temple in Ukraine and one of the largest in Europe, with an active congregation that Indian students have also joined at weekends.

Western Ukraine

  • ISKCON Lviv temple (Lviv) — a newer temple building that hosted devotees displaced from the east during the war.
  • ISKCON centres in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lutsk — listed in ISKCON's centre directory.

Southern and central Ukraine

  • Vrindavan Cultural Centre (ISKCON) (Odesa).
  • New Mayapura — an ISKCON rural retreat centre outside Dnipro.
  • ISKCON centres in Cherkasy, Kremenchuk, Zhytomyr and Nikopol — listed in ISKCON's centre directory.

Eastern Ukraine

ISKCON reported an active community and Food for Life programme in Kharkiv during the war, but we could not confirm a current temple listing there. We could not confirm any Hindu place of worship in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih or Sevastopol.

The Embassy of India in Kyiv has supported Indian cultural events in the past. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

How Diwali is celebrated in Ukraine

Diwali in Ukraine is a quiet, community-scale festival. At ISKCON temples the emphasis is on Krishna: Diwali evening is often kept with a Deepotsava (lamp offering), kirtan, a talk on the meaning of the festival and a vegetarian feast. The following day's Govardhan Puja, with a hill of sweets and prepared dishes offered as Annakut, is one of the most loved festivals in the Hare Krishna calendar, and many temples celebrate it on the nearest weekend.

Indian families, business people and students mark Lakshmi Puja at home or in shared flats, often with a small altar, rangoli at the door, diyas on the windowsill and sweets shared with friends and Ukrainian neighbours. Before the war, Diwali events in Kyiv sometimes combined Indian dance, yoga and food. Since 2022 the community has become smaller and gatherings are more modest, and many people join puja and kirtan online with family in India or elsewhere.

In early November Ukraine is dark by late afternoon, so the lamps come into their own. If you share a building, a few diyas or electric lights in the window carry the spirit of Diwali without any risk.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

A home puja needs only a clean space, a little time inside the muhurat and a sincere heart. A simple order:

  1. Clean the home in the days before, and on Diwali evening bathe and wear fresh clothes.
  2. Set up a small altar on a raised surface with a red or yellow cloth, and place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha (Ganesha on Lakshmi's left as you face them).
  3. Place a kalash (pot of water) with mango or betel leaves and a coconut, if you have them, plus a few coins, rice grains and flowers.
  4. Light a ghee or oil diya and incense. Begin with a short prayer to Ganesha to remove obstacles.
  5. Offer Lakshmi kumkum, haldi, flowers, sweets, fruit and a few coins or new notes, chanting Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah or reading the Shri Suktam if you know it.
  6. Perform aarti to Lakshmi and Ganesha, then share prasad with everyone at home.
  7. Light diyas around the home, especially near the entrance and windows.

Families from different regions follow their own customs, such as Kali Puja in Bengali homes or Kubera puja in some traditions. Follow what your family and your priest recommend.

Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Ukraine

  • Weekends help: Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November and Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, so most people can attend the main evening puja without leaving work early.
  • Plan for early darkness: sunset in Kyiv is at 4:22 PM on Diwali, and in Kharkiv at 4:01 PM. Prepare the altar before sunset so you can begin as soon as the muhurat starts.
  • Safety first: follow official guidance, air-raid alerts and any local curfew rules. Choose a place of worship you can reach and leave safely, and keep candles away from curtains.
  • Fireworks: rules are set by the authorities and may be restricted, so check current local rules before buying or using any.
  • Book early: if you want a priest or temple to perform a puja for your family, ask several weeks ahead, as temples are busy around Diwali.
  • Cold weather: November evenings are cold, so dress warmly if you are visiting a temple or lighting lamps outdoors.
