Diwali 2026 in Romania: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Hindu Temples
Lakshmi Puja in Romania falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Vrishabha muhurat from 5:14 PM to 6:59 PM in Bucharest. Here are the five days, timings for Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Constanţa, and where Romania's small Hindu community gathers.
Diwali 2026 in Romania: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Bucharest the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:14 PM to 6:59 PM (Romanian time, UTC+2). The five days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November, and the dates are the same in every Romanian city we checked. Only the muhurat shifts slightly from city to city, because sunset differs between Iaşi in the east and Cluj-Napoca in the west.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates using Drik Panchang tithi times and Drik's rules for choosing each festival day, and checked our method against Drik's own published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules: temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead, so check their websites and social pages.
Diwali 2026 dates in Romania
These are the five days for Bucharest. Every other Romanian city in our list has the same dates.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November 2026 | Worship of Dhanvantari and Lakshmi; buying new utensils, silver or gold; first diyas lit |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 (early morning) | Early oil bath before sunrise, Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 (evening) | Main evening puja to Lakshmi and Ganesha; muhurat 5:14 PM to 6:59 PM in Bucharest |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November 2026 | Krishna lifting Govardhan hill; food offerings (annakut) in temples |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday 10 November 2026 | Sisters pray for their brothers' wellbeing; tilak and gifts |
For reference, Drik Panchang gives the Amavasya (new moon) tithi as 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November IST. In Romanian time that is Sun 8 Nov, 7:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 9:01 AM, so Amavasya covers the whole evening of Sunday 8 November. That is why Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday in Romania. Chaturdashi is still running at dawn on Sunday, so the Naraka Chaturdashi early bath is also on Sunday morning, and Saturday 7 November has no main observance.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained
Two windows of time matter for the main Diwali puja. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the evening period that starts at sunset. In Bucharest on Sunday 8 November the sun sets at 4:56 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 4:56 PM to 7:45 PM. Lakshmi Puja is traditionally done in this evening window, while Amavasya is in force.
The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna, the time when the sign of Taurus is rising on the eastern horizon. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and families pray during a fixed lagna so that Lakshmi's blessings stay in the home. Where Vrishabha overlaps Pradosh Kaal, that overlap is the muhurat. In Bucharest it is 5:14 PM to 6:59 PM.
If you cannot manage the muhurat, you may perform the puja at any time during the Pradosh Kaal shown for your city. Romanian evenings in November are dark early, so the muhurat comes at a convenient hour: with Lakshmi Puja on a Sunday, most families can set up the altar in the afternoon and sit down for the puja soon after five.
Hindu temples in Romania for Diwali
Romania's Hindu community is small, and we could not confirm a traditional community mandir anywhere in the country. The places below are confirmed in ISKCON's official centre directory, ISKCON News or the Indian Embassy's own press releases. We list only names and cities. Contact them before you go.
Bucharest
- ISKCON Center for Vedic Studies, Bucharest: the Hare Krishna centre in the capital, with regular weekly programmes of kirtan, discourses and vegetarian prasad. It has the largest ISKCON congregation in Romania.
- Embassy of India, Bucharest: organises festival gatherings for the Indian community and friends of India. In December 2025 it held a diya-lighting celebration to mark Deepavali's inscription on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and in 2026 it has held Holi events in Bucharest and Timişoara.
Western Romania
- ISKCON Timişoara, Timişoara: a long-standing Hare Krishna community that in 2025 completed legal proceedings to regain its original temple property.
- ISKCON Oradea, Oradea: a small group of devotees linked to the Bucharest and Timişoara centres.
We found no confirmed Hindu temple in Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi or Constanţa. If you live there, or far from any centre, a home puja is completely proper. Lakshmi Puja has always been mainly a household ritual, and many Indian families in Romania celebrate at home or with a few friends from their university or workplace.
How Diwali is celebrated in Romania
Romania has no history of large-scale Indian migration of the kind seen in the Caribbean or East Africa. Its Hindu community is modern and mostly made up of Indian students, IT and business professionals, and their families, along with Romanians who follow Hindu traditions through ISKCON and yoga groups. Many live in Bucharest, Timişoara, Cluj-Napoca and Iaşi.
Because the community is spread thinly, Diwali in Romania is usually a mix of home pujas, student gatherings and occasional larger events. Typical programmes include Lakshmi and Ganesha puja, aarti, bhajans or kirtan, lighting diyas, and a shared meal or sweets. Diwali falls in the month of Kartik, which ISKCON devotees keep as Damodara month by offering lamps to Krishna each evening, and ISKCON centres usually celebrate Govardhan Puja with an annakut of many dishes.
Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same evening, and Jain households observe Diwali as the day of Lord Mahavira's nirvana. Whatever your tradition, the spirit of the festival is the same: light over darkness, and a fresh start with family and friends.
November in Romania is cold and often damp, with early sunsets. That makes the diyas and fairy lights especially welcome, but most celebrations happen indoors rather than outside.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
You do not need a priest to perform Lakshmi Puja. This short vidhi is followed by many families and can be adapted to your own tradition.
- Clean the house during the day, decorate the entrance with a rangoli and toran, and set up a small altar on a raised platform covered with a red or yellow cloth.
- Place images or murtis of Ganesha and Lakshmi (with Kubera or Saraswati if your family includes them), a kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut, and a plate of rice.
- Before the muhurat, bathe, wear clean or new clothes, and light the main ghee diya, which should stay lit through the night if it is safe.
- Begin with Ganesha: invoke him, offer flowers, kumkum, haldi and a sweet, and chant his name or a simple mantra.
- Worship Lakshmi with flowers, akshat (rice), kumkum, a coin or jewellery, sweets and fruit. Chant the Shri Suktam, Lakshmi Ashtakam or simply 'Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah'.
- Worship your account books, laptop or cash box if you run a business.
- Perform the aarti together, then light diyas around the house, at doorways and in windows.
- Share prasad with family and neighbours, and with Romanian friends and colleagues if you like.

Practical tips for Diwali in Romania
- Weekdays and holidays: Lakshmi Puja and the Naraka Chaturdashi bath both fall on Sunday 8 November, which helps families with work and classes. Dhanteras is on Friday, while Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj are working days. Diwali is not a public holiday in Romania.
- Early sunset: Sunset on 8 November is at 4:43 PM in Iaşi, 4:56 PM in Bucharest and 5:00 PM in Cluj-Napoca. Have the altar ready by mid-afternoon.
- Fireworks: Rules are set by Romanian law and local authorities. Check with your city hall before using any, and remember that many flats have rules about open flames on balconies.
- Fire safety: Heating is on and windows are usually closed in November. Keep diyas away from curtains, never leave them unattended and ventilate the room after lighting camphor or incense.
- Temple pujas: Priests are very few in Romania. If you want a puja performed for your family or a group, contact ISKCON or community organisers early.
- Puja items: Indian groceries are found mainly in Bucharest and the larger university cities. Buy ghee, camphor, kumkum and diya wicks in advance, or order online in good time.
