Diwali 2026 in Turkey: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Where to Celebrate
Lakshmi Puja in Turkey falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Vrishabha muhurat from 5:59 PM to 7:48 PM in Ankara. Here are the five days, city timings and where to celebrate.
Quick answer: in Turkey, Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Ankara muhurat is 5:59 PM to 7:48 PM Turkish time. In Istanbul it is 6:11 PM to 7:59 PM. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are the same in every Turkish city. We could not confirm a dedicated Hindu temple in Turkey, so most families keep Diwali at home, with the ISKCON community and Indian associations in Istanbul and Ankara as the main gathering points.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's rules for each festival, and checked our method against Drik's own dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset. We do not list event schedules, because they change every year. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
Diwali 2026 dates in Turkey
These are the five days of Diwali for Ankara. The same dates apply throughout Turkey.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November | Buying new utensils, gold or silver; a lamp for Yama at dusk |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | Early oil bath (abhyang snan); Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | Evening worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha, lighting of diyas |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November | Food offering to Krishna as Govardhan; New Year for many Gujarati families |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday 10 November | Sisters pray for their brothers' wellbeing; brothers visit with gifts |
Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day in Turkey this year. In Turkish time, Amavasya runs from Sun 8 Nov, 8:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 10:01 AM (11:27 AM 8 Nov to 12:31 PM 9 Nov IST). Sunday evening is therefore the only evening with Amavasya during Pradosh Kaal, which is why Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, and the Chaturdashi pre-dawn bath also falls on Sunday morning.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Turkey explained
Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening of Amavasya, during Pradosh Kaal, the window of roughly two and three-quarter hours that begins at sunset. In Ankara the sun sets at 5:39 PM on 8 November, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:39 PM to 8:24 PM.
Within Pradosh Kaal, the most auspicious part is when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthira) sign, and worshipping Lakshmi in a fixed lagna is traditionally understood to help prosperity stay in the home. In Ankara, Vrishabha rises from 5:59 PM to 7:48 PM, which is the muhurat we give.
In Istanbul the sun sets later, at 5:52 PM, giving Pradosh Kaal from 5:52 PM to 8:38 PM and a muhurat of 6:11 PM to 7:59 PM. If you cannot begin within the muhurat, any time in your city's Pradosh Kaal is still a proper time for Lakshmi Puja. Begin with Ganesha, then Lakshmi, and keep at least one lamp burning through the evening.
Hindu temples in Turkey for Diwali
Turkey's Hindu community is very small. There is no history of indentured or large-scale migration from India, as there is in the Caribbean or Mauritius; most Hindus here are Indian professionals, students and their families, people married to Turkish citizens, and a small number of Turkish devotees of Krishna. We searched carefully and could not confirm a public, dedicated Hindu temple (mandir) anywhere in Turkey. These are the Hindu and Indian community bodies we could confirm:
Istanbul
- ISKCON Türkiye (Hare Krishna community), Istanbul: the most active Hindu devotional group in the country, with programmes, kirtan and prasadam in the city. It does not run a traditional temple building.
- Friends of India Association (FOIA), Istanbul: an Indian community association that has organised an annual Diwali festival in the city together with the Consulate General.
- Consulate General of India, Istanbul: supports Indian cultural events in the city.
Ankara
- Embassy of India, Ankara: has hosted Indian cultural events that include Diwali, often with local friendship groups.
- ISKCON Türkiye, Ankara: ISKCON volunteers are active in the city, though we could not confirm a regular public worship venue.
Outside Istanbul and Ankara we could not confirm any Hindu place of worship. If you live in İzmir, Bursa, Antalya or elsewhere, a home puja is the natural way to keep Diwali, and online programmes from ISKCON and Indian temples abroad can help you feel part of a wider celebration. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
How Diwali is celebrated in Turkey
For most Hindu families in Turkey, Diwali is a home festival. The house is cleaned in the days before, a rangoli is drawn at the door, and diyas or candles are placed on windowsills and balconies on the evening of Lakshmi Puja. Families exchange sweets with friends and neighbours, and many Turkish friends and colleagues are happy to join a Diwali dinner.
Community Diwali events in Istanbul and Ankara, when they are held, are usually cultural evenings rather than temple pujas: they typically include Indian food, music and dance, henna, and sometimes a short aarti. The ISKCON community tends to mark Diwali and Govardhan Puja with kirtan, a talk on the festival's stories and a shared vegetarian meal, which can be a good option for anyone who wants a devotional gathering.
Sikh friends may mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same evening, and Jain families observe Diwali as the day of Lord Mahavira's nirvana. In a small diaspora like Turkey's, these celebrations often come together in the same homes and gatherings.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
A home puja does not need a priest. A simple version, suited to a flat in Istanbul or Ankara, is below.
- Clean the puja area and spread a red or yellow cloth on a low table. Place images or murtis of Ganesha and Lakshmi, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's left.
- Set out a kalash of water with mango or betel leaves (or any clean green leaves) and a coconut, plus a few coins, rice and flowers.
- Light a ghee diya and incense. Wash your hands, sit facing east or north, and take a moment of silence with a sankalp naming the day and your family.
- Worship Ganesha first with flowers, rice, kumkum and a sweet, then Lakshmi with the same offerings. Add Kubera and your account books or wallet if that is your family custom.
- Chant the Lakshmi or Ganesha mantras you know, or simply read a Lakshmi aarti, and offer sweets, fruit and dry fruits as prasad.
- Perform the aarti, then light diyas or candles around the home. Share prasad with family and neighbours.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Turkey
- Weekdays: Dhanteras is a Friday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, which makes the main evening easy. Govardhan Puja (Monday) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday) fall on working days, so plan any visits for the evening.
- Holidays: check the official 2026 holiday list; we have not assumed any Diwali holiday in Turkey.
- Sunset and weather: by 8 November it is dark before 6 PM in most cities, and evenings in Ankara and Konya can be cold. Keep lamps indoors or on sheltered balconies, especially in wind or rain.
- Fireworks: rules are set by the authorities and local governors and municipalities. Check what is permitted before buying or lighting any, and keep to diyas and candles in apartment blocks.
- Supplies: diyas, puja items and Indian sweets can be hard to find. Order online in good time, or use ordinary candles and home-made sweets; the intention matters more than the items.
- Community events: if you want to join a gathering or arrange a puja, contact ISKCON Türkiye or the Indian associations early, as space at community events can be limited.
